Where and how did it happen??

At a fancy restaurant. I had already been having timeable contractions while we waited on our table, but as soon as we ordered the main course, I felt a "pop" and then went to the bathroom to check it out. As soon as I sat down, there was a huge gush and I knew it had broken.

I was pushing P out.
@BabyBoecksMom: OMGosh! I guess atleast you made it to the bathroom!

8 o'clock in the morning. I was in bed, asleep with DH even though it was a Monday (he worked night shift at the time). Suddenly had to desperately go to the bathroom, which was nothing new. But then a few minutes later, I had to get up and go again. This went on for an hour before it clicked that maybe my water had broken. I called my midwives, they said it sounded like my water had broken and they would see me that afternoon to see if it was.
It was but my contractions never started afterwards so 8 o'clock next morning, Tuesday, they induced.

At 5am after I had gotten back into bed after going to the bathroom. My contractions started about 3.5 hours later.

@BabyBoecksMom: So no gush at the table?? My fear is of this happening somewhere public and making a huge mess!
@runsyellowlites: I'm kind of hoping that if my water does break on its own, it does it while I'm already on the toilet!
@NaturallyCathy: So was yours more a leak that just continued for a while? Not a huge gush? No mess in the bed??
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@hilsy85: Did it get all over your bed? Did you have a mattress protector or anything to protect your mattress? I'm so nervous about making a mess!

@NaturallyCathy we are almost twins! At least for the timing
Mine was at 8am on a Sunday morning at 37.5 weeks. I was laying in bed, awake but too lazy to move, heard a pop (I promise I am not making that up!) and felt a trickle and immediately jumped up and went and stood in the tub, while it ran down my legs. I somehow managed not to get anything on the sheets, woo hoo! I called the advice nurse who told me to come in, then DH and I showered, and we eventually left for the hospital (after DH installed the carseat!) around 10am, when I was just starting to have contractions.
Funny thing is that my mom had 5 kids, and I was the only one where her water broke before contractions (she was out shopping!)

@Adira: No mess in the bed but as the day progressed, I had to use pads and change them frequently depending on my activity. It was basically like my bladder had let go but it was clear liquid, not pee. Never got better, never got much worse than a trickle. No gush, no mess (mostly). I think I only had to change pants once because I had managed to leak through my pad because I was laughing so hard at something!

@runsyellowlites: @Adira: Surprisingly, it didn't leak until I sat down. After that, it was gushing all the way to the car with each step. So gross!!!

I got up at 2:30 to use the bathroom, as usual, but instead of the usual pregnant-lady trickle, there was a huge gush and splash. I sat for a minute trying to figure out what had just happened, but when I felt my belly was softer, I knew it had broken. My ex thought I was crazy, though, and was annoyed that I wanted to go to the hospital...but I was 32 weeks, so I wanted to get to the hospital asap. Ex was totally convinced that they'd tell me I was crazy and send me home. Nope!
During THIS pregnancy, I'm paranoid every time I use the bathroom in the middle of the night, lol.

When I was already admitted into the hospital. I just got out of the bathtub and was in mid contraction. It just gushed out. Oh and I was about 5-6 cm dilated.

@babyboecksmom: Lol, yeah, that's gross...happened to me, too. Even at the hospital, I had a towel between my legs, and it just felt like I kept peeing on myself.

@BabyBoecksMom: Oh my gosh - I wonder if I should put some garbage bags in the car and stuff just in case so I can protect my seats! I'm worried about making a mess that I can't clean up later! What was your experience with that?

2:30 in the morning. I had been having contractions all day--about 20 minutes apart. When I went to sleep they were about 15 minutes apart. I was asleep in bed and felt a gush of water come out of me. Luckily I sleep on the side closest to the bathroom and was wearing a pad because my mucus plug had been coming in pieces (gross!) I did have to change everything--it was soaked! But nothing leaked onto the bed.

Mine broke in bed! I felt a gush and just had a steady trickle after that. The trickle kept going for as long into labor as I remember. I stayed in bed for a few minutes because I was in denial about it being my water breaking and none got on my sheets/mattress!
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@katiew92081: haha, I'm also paranoid every time I use the bathroom at night! BUT I'd rather it happen there than anywhere else!

@Running Elley: How did it NOT get on your sheets/mattress??? This is my biggest fear!!

I was sleeping on the couch (it was the only place I could get comfortable with my 6 pillows). I felt a pop, kind of like he kicked me really hard. Then had an urge to pee. When I stood up I felt a trickle and thought I peed a little bit. It took about 30 min of back and forth to the bathroom for me to realize maybe my water broke. Not long after that the contractions got really strong. It trickled for a long time until I sat up to get my epidural, then there were three huge gushes.

i was in the hospital waiting room when i was pregnant charlie. it leaked through my pad all over the chair.
with olive they had to break it.

A couple hours into labor it broke on its own! I'm glad they didn't have to break it...

@Adira: mine was more of a trickle thsn a gush. but i did have a mattress protector just in case!
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
Did any of you ladies get it on anything (couch, chair, bed, etc?) I'm nervous about how easy it is to clean after, or should I start putting a garbage bag under me wherever I go??
GOLD / grapefruit / 4555 posts
@Adira: I was in the car, sat on a towel just in case; then I was in the doctor's office, no towel, just pad; then was at our house, my parents house, then the hospital next morning - no mess, no leaking on the furniture. Just lots and lots of used pads.

I was sitting on the yoga ball, watching tv and eating digiorno pizza! lol! it just felt like i started peeing but couldn't control it. about 15 minutes later it happened again!
coconut / 8681 posts
@Adira: It didn't start really trickling out until I stood up if that makes any sense. Once we got in the car to go to the hospital I had a towel underneath me (even though I already had a pad on).

Early in the morning when I turned over in bed. I felt a gush and ran to the bathroom and was able to contain the mess. I grabbed one of the little waterproof pads I had for LO and a towel for the ride to the hospital, though.

3am in bed, I woke up and thought I pee'd myself. Thank God for a mattress protector.

@Adira: I was just wondering about this too, I'm glad you posted. We are getting a nice, new, expensive bed when we move and I would be devastated if I ruined it! I was wondering if I need to get a protective mattress pad for my side when it gets close. It sounds like no one had a major mess on their bed, at least.

During transition at the hospital when I was being admitted. No gush or anything but I remember telling the nurse and DH that either my water had broken or I was peeing a little with each contraction.

I was induced with Cervidil. I was barely 1cm dilated when I checked in (pre-e). I rolled over in bed and heard the "pop". I knew immediately what it was. It was like a tidal wave, the Cervidil came out when that happened, lol

@Adira: We had just gotten home from work, and wanted to lay down for a quick nap before dinner... when I got up to use the restroom I felt a light trickle into my pantyliner. It was around 5:30pm so we cancelled dinner and DH picked up Wendy's for dinner instead. The contractions started 2 hours later.

@Foodnerd81: My doula recommended we put one of those vinyl picnic sheets underneath our bedsheet to protect our mattress. That's a cheaper option if you don't want to buy a mattress protector! We also had a trashbag in the car for me to sit on with a towel over it just in case my water ended up breaking in the car. I also wore pads the last couple weeks before my due date.

Mine broke in bed but it didn't get on anything. I felt it pop so I just swung my legs off the side of the bed. Mine was more like a leak than a gush.
I should have known it was coming. Id been having contractions all day that were getting closer together and just lost my MP. So I probably should have thought about the possibility but luckily no major mess.

At 9:45 at night, at home. DH and I had gone out to dinner with my FIL earlier that evening, and I had taken a long, hot shower to try to relax and take my mind off any impending labor (I was 2 days away from my due date and the doctor had stripped my membranes the day before so I was anxious). I was getting into bed and I felt a pop and a huge contraction and realized it felt like I'd wet my pants. I went to the bathroom and water just kept coming out into the toilet, and then onto the floor when I stood up (thankfully the tiled bathroom floor). Then I started having contractions every 10 minutes and within an hour when we got to the hospital was 7 cm and having them every 2 minutes!

First time it started leaking a few hours after labor started then didn't break until I was in the tub in the middle of a really intense contraction. Second time I was in bed sleeping, it broke at 5:09 am and my contractions started 15-30 minutes later.

I appreciate so much hearing everyone's experiences!!! It sounds like, for the most part, people didn't have huge messes with their water breaking, but that I should probably get something for the car and my bed JUST to be on the safe side!

it was around 5am and i was in bed. i felt the pop and reached down there to feel if there way any fluid, but didn't feel anything. i got up to use the bathroom, and lost my mucus plug. then my water started coming in small gushes. i had bought some pads beforehand to use, and was changing them out every 5 minutes or so. my contractions started probably within 10 minutes of my water breaking.
