We were invited to DH's friend's son's birthday party but we can't go. They were friend's way back when, not good friends but they stayed in touch through facebook, and since they moved back into the area and we both have kids we all started hanging out. Am I supposed to get him a gift to give to him the next time I see him, or is it ok to skip it?

I'm probably not the best one to give advice, but I always ask myself "Do these people give ME gifts or do I WANT them to give me gifts?" and that's how I decide.
Are they likely to get your children gifts for their birthdays? If so, then yes, you should get them a gift. If not, then I think you can skip it (and definitely don't expect them to get your kids gifts).

I don't think so... It's not like a wedding, where you would still send a gift even if you couldn't attend. I think since it's not your BFF's kid, skipping a present is totally ok. I think with kids and gifts, if you wouldn't normally purchase one for them even if they didn't have a party, and they're not family, you're not obligated to bring them a present unless you attend the party. You always COULD send a gift, it would be very nice of you, but certainly not required.

@Adira: That's a good thought. They didn't live here during my LO's birthday so I don't really know.... but I wouldn't have wanted or expected a gift.

I also wouldn't send a gift. If you feel the need to give anything, maybe a cute card with a sticker book or something in the mail. I always liked getting cards when I was little. Although, you didn't mention age so that might not be appropriate haha

Nope. DH actually thinks its annoying that we have to buy birthday presents for any of our friends at this point. He thinks we are too old for that.

For a child, I probably would get a gift. Especially if it's someone I would be hanging out with soon.

I would say yes to the gift, as it's a nice gesture that goes a long way towards growing/establishing the friendship between you guys as couple friends. Luckily, for kids something small works just fine so there's no need to spend a ton or run around town looking for the perfect thing.
