When I went out a while ago I saw that some houses on my street had been TPed. Then when I came back (just after the kids walk home from school) I saw that the rest of the houses had been hit, including ours. I know who walks down the street and they don't even live in our neighborhood. But they do come to our street looking for candy, screaming obnoxiously. (We don't actually have many young kids in our neighborhood.) Really, I'm supposed to be nice to these kids?

No, I'd put a note on the door with a photo of your candy bowl, telling them that they will not be getting any of it because of their actions. Though I'd kinda be afraid of worse happening...

Last night was mischief night, and I know it's still a significant tradition in some areas. It is obnoxious, but be happy it's only toilet paper, and not egged cars or soaped windows.
I'm not sure it would bother me enough to avoid giving out candy, but I'm a sucker for Halloween.

I think I would turn my light off early so they don't hit your house for candy... and by early I mean 5:30.

@Mrs.Someone: These children might be illiterate...I had a note out with a bowl last year because of all the storm chaos and they all rang the doorbell anyway! Might just give our candy to neighbors and turn off the lights.
@deerylou: Yeah I know TP is not the hardest thing to clean up. It's just not the first time these kids have caused trouble. We've had to call the school numerous times about them.

I'm mean!Out of laziness, I'm just going to turn off my lights this year. We don't get a ton of kids, and I just don't feel like dealing with it since we're usually cooking dinner at the same time.

I would still have candy available for them (and all kids). I TP'd houses at Halloween a couple times and still somehow managed to be a pretty good student and a productive member of society.
Kids do dumb things; meh, hallwoeen is only once a year.

Could you say something like you are only giving candy to kids under a certain age and just wish the ones you don't want to give candy to a Happy Halloween?

@spaniellove: I would have a separate bowl filled with silly little kiddy toys that the big kids would hate. Explain that you didn't buy any candy this year. Then when the cute little kids come to the door, give them candy as well. Haha.

I wouldn't. But I would trade with you in a heartbeat - someone shot in my driver's window. Along with everyone else on my street.

@spaniellove: i'm seriously losing hope in the world, haha. i know in the grand scheme of life it's not the worst that could have happened (to either of us) but like, wtf? just because it's "halloween" it's an excuse to ruin property? last year, i got an entire carton of eggs on my back window - 2 mornings in a row. so over it.

I think there's a difference between average, hoodlum behavior, and illegal insanity. Shooting out peoples windows is really horrific, but TP is a silly tradition in some areas. Are most of you on the east coast? My family is from Jersey, and Mischief Night, and Halloween pranks are all the rage back there. In California, I've seen one smashed pumpkin. People don't know that the night before Halloween is even a thing; it's weird.

@deerylou: Nothing compares to what @sorrycharlie: went through. But this is the same group of kids repeatedly vandalizing our street on their way to and from school...they've torn up our lawns (that are carefully maintained) with their bikes, dragged our trash up and down the street so we have to clean it up, stolen fixtures from in front of my house, destroyed people's nice mailboxes, etc.

@spaniellove: Ah, see, I thought this was just a Halloween prank, so I was being more lenient. How old are these kids? Have you or your neighbors attempted to confront them about their vandalism while they're on your street? It's a bummer they don't live close by, or I would speak to their parents, directly.

@spaniellove: I'd be inclined to turn my lights off after 6pm or so, and maybe haul in any outdoor decorations. No need to risk a smashed pumpkin. Also, destroying a mailbox is a federal offense. Call the cops on those hooligans.

@deerylou: I think they're in middle school now. I've confronted them once and spoken to the school a few times but yeah, it's a shame I can't just get their parents involved. Something tells me their parents aren't as involved as their classmates' parents because everyone else in the area gets picked up directly from school.
@honeybear: Apparently others had the same idea because when I went out to get the pumpkins I saw that some of the moms who are the most hard-core about decorating had already brought in their stuff!

@spaniellove: I don't get how Halloween is sometimes seen as a vandalism free for all night. If they do anything else or cause further damage, you should call the cops , especially since they have a history of vandalism. I think in some communities they hold the parents liable.
