Well after my post earlier today, Lo woke up 3 hours after we put him down and would.not.go.to.sleep. Just screaming constantly. So we are now sleep training...? I have no idea if it'll even work if you start in the middle of the night but I have no idea what else to do. So I'm waiting a 5 min interval, listening to him scream

It's no fun :(. We wait 10 minutes before doing anything. We found that 5 minutes was too soon and always wound her up more. Usually she goes to sleep in minute 2 or 9. I hope you see some progress soon!

Sometimes impromptu is the best! Hang in there...just try to stick with the intervals. Consistency is key. Good luck!!

@Weagle: I'm going to try 6 minutes next...5 minutes feels like an eternity already, but I see what you mean about it maybe not being enough time to let him settle down.

@hilsy85: we stayed in the room until she calmed down, and started the timer once she started really crying. I remember how hard it was...5 minutes felt soo long that i sprinted up the stairs!

@hilsy85: It's so hard. I had to realize that my feelings of "she needs me" weren't actually helping her at all. They were just keeping her from learning how to be a better sleeper. But, that's just my experience with my baby. It's different for everyone, but you'll figure out what works for your LO soon :).

@Freckles: ok I was actually wondering about that...so the interval starts once they start crying after you leave the room right? And if they stop crying and then start again you restart the interval when thy start crying again right?

@hilsy85: yes, i hated stopping the timer and resetting it. Dh was anal about doing it while i just wanted the timer to continue. Ahhh, is he hiding in the bathtub?! You guys are in this together!

@hilsy85: at that time she was swaddled so we didn't have to. I know for the first couple of checks we held her because she was crying so hard, so those were the only times we adjusted her. Good luck!

Thanks so much ladies! Well, we survived...Lo was up from 10-midnight; the 1st hour we were trying rocking and nursing; the 2n hour I started doing checks. I did 2 min, 2 min, 3 min, 5 min, and 7 min. After that he cried on and off (2 min on, 5 min off etc) for about 20 min and then fell asleep. He woke up at 1, I fed him (maybe a mistake?) and put him down. Did one 2 min check and then he slept from 120 to 645. Not bad for the first night I guess! Well see how tonight goes... -

Oh how I dread this... H cannot fall asleep on her own- screams bloody murder unless she's totally conked out when she goes down....We've got to address this soon!!!

However, I think we are also going to needto nap train at the same time...Lo is now screaming everytime I attempt to put him in his crib for a nap after rocking him to sleep. Waaah I don't want to do both!!!

That sounds pretty successful for a first night! Hopefully it just gets easier from here. We had another rough night last night. I don't know what's going on with him!

@mrskc: it was pretty horrible--I have never ever heard him cry like that. The thing is, he cried whether we were holding him or whether he was in his crib, so after an hour, I figured we had nothing to lose!

@shopaholic: thanks!putting him to bed tonight went well--he cried for 2 minutes, I shushed him, and then he fussed a bit for 10 min and went to sleep. Hopefully the rest of the night is good!

@hilsy85: I found that the first night was the worst. I mistakenly let her cry for 20 minutes (as recommended by the pediatrician that day) and then started doing intervals. Whatever we did, it worked. She puts herself to sleep within 2 minutes every night since then...and it was exactly a month ago!

@Tidybee: that's awesome! Gives me hope just wanted to update on night 2...he went down pretty well at 6:30; I had to do a 2 min check but then he went to sleep. Woke up at 10:30, did another 2 min check and gave him his paci back, and he went back to sleep. Woke at 2:15, I nursed him, and he went back down til 5:45.
That's when it got ugly...I didn't want to feed him then, because it seemed too close to his usual wake up time of 645/7, and I don't want him to get used to waking up and eating at 545. Plus, he still seemed tired...so I did 2 min check, 2 min check, 3 min check, 5 min check...by 645 he was back asleep, but that hour was brutal, and I wasn't able to go back to sleep. He only slept a half hour, but when he woke up he was in a cheerful mood.
Nap training also started today and I think it's even worse than night time training
Lo is also hoarse today from crying and I feel like such a crappy mama...

it really is the worst thing ever....For our 2nd nap, I just ended up staying in his room with him, sitting in his glider, and shushing him from afar. I soothed him every time he started to cry, and it took a half hour, but he fell asleep. And I feel so much better about this method than letting him cry at all. We'll see how it goes the rest of the day

Good for you, finally got a chance to comment, C won't know what's coming once she's better!! You're doing great and hopefully tonight will be better.
I am also bigtime struggling with the wake ups 5am or so, she lays there babbling and all I can think of from bed is "go to sleep", but she is just happily laying there babbling.
Good for you for getting to the nap training too, I won't be far behind you!!!
