My one year old DS has been absolutely inconsolable today. I have a suspicion as to the culprit - another ear infection. He had a double ear infection in December, which then went to just one ear being infected, and then a cold. So for most of the month of December and the beginning of January, my little guy has been absolutely miserable.
He's been tugging at his ear a lot these last few days, which can either mean he's teething or he's tired and doesn't want to go to sleep but today he's started putting his finger in one ear. Either his thumb or his forefinger. He hasn't had quite the appetite he normally does and has been spitting food out of his mouth - which he never did before. Today, we've kept him to simple things, like puffs, toast, apple sauce and the likes just to see if maybe the problem is with his tummy.
Last night, he woke us up twice (which he hasn't done in a long time) in absolute tears. This wasn't the 'feed me' kind of crying, this was the 'something's wrong, something hurts'. The first time I was able to give him his pacifier and cuddle him back to sleep. The second time I gave him medicine mixed in with his formula and fed him before putting him back to bed. No matter what I try to do today to keep him happy, within a few minutes he's dissolving into tears and literally wandering around the room in circles, crying his 'something's wrong' cry. He won't let me console him in all the normal ways and I'm at my wits end to make him feel better!
Bottle's not working, puffs aren't working, his favorite toys and blanket aren't working. If I pick him up, he still cries. If I put him down, he cries more. If I try and ignore him, he just keeps crying and when I acknowledge his feelings and try to comfort him, he turns away. I can't figure out how to alleviate his pain any more than I'm already doing - infant ibuprofen - and his doctor's office isn't open today.
Anyone have any suggestions? I'm all ears!
