Independence Day Question

For those who live in the US:

I hear a lot of citizens bashing the country (not here, just in general) - politics, laws, weather, school systems, government programs, people, race, etc etc etc... I hardly hear good things about this country.

So my question is do your love or dislike the US? Why or why not? What are good and bad things about? What would you change?

I don't think we're a perfect country by any means - but I love America. I so appreciate the freedom here to believe what we want, have countless opportunities, be one of the most diverse nations in the world, and the diversity of the states geographically and politically. There is a little of something for everyone. I feel proud to be an American citizen.

What I would change? Def the healthcare in the US! I don't know what I want it to be - but I don't like how it is now.

I love the tough, hardworking American spirit. Sometimes it's hard to see because I tend to think that our generation is a bunch of entitled pansies, but when the rubber meets the road, we buck up and do what needs to be done.

I don't think we're the greatest/most important/best country in the world.

I do think we're a pretty great country with a fantastic constitution and some really amazing people.

I love this country even though I'm not a citizen (yet)... I totally plan to apply when I'm eligible!

I think Americans are some of the friendliest, most compassionate and most generous people around.

I like that even though we all are very different, when bad things happen, Americans are very good at sticking together and having each others backs.

What I don't like is the idea that we are still the 'greatest country in the world.' I think it sets us up for slower progress because we think we are already on top.

But yay America! Can't wait for fireworks!!

I LOVE the US! I'm a hue fan of our country, and am proud to be a citizen. I wouldn't mind living in other countries, though. And I don't think we have the best of everything.

Oh and I wanted to add that I love America because threads like these are not illegal. We can say what we would change about our country without fear of repercussions. That's a pretty big deal!

The "American Dream". It's different for everyone but I love that people come here for that dream and for the most part it's attainable. My family came here when I was 3 for that "dream". I think for my parents it wasn't the house with white picket fence. It was a better life for their children and their children's children. To give their children the chance at higher education. In China you basically have to be THE smartest, like seriously AP students would not cut it there, to get into university. Here everyone can go to college!

I love that it's a big melting pot. What other country do you have people from all over the world living here?

The food. SO much good food! From all over the world. What other country has AMAZING representation of world cuisines?

There is so much I would change about this country. Healthcare. I think this country needs to concentrate more on itself than other countries. America needs to stop taking care of everyone else and take care of it's own. Poverty is here. Crime is here. Fix us first.

@Arden: Your statement reminded me of this, for anyone who has never seen The Newsroom. (Anyone who hasnt seen the show should watch it!!)

That being said, I do love the US. I think we are flawed and egotistical and corrupt... but I don't think that's a problem exclusive to us at all.

I think that America is a beautiful country. It amazes me that the same nation can have glaciers, mountains, deserts and vast forests. I love that Americans are passionate. Even if that conviction is sometimes misplaced or misguided, people in the US are willing to stand up for what they think is right. I love that we have the freedom to stand up for our beliefs without fear of the government punishing us. I also love that one person with enough conviction, can enact change if they work hard enough.

What could change? A lot. A whole lot. Term limits on Congress to help prevent career politicians who are more concerned with their pockets than their constituents. Healthcare. Public education, starting with getting rid of NCLB which is the single worst thing to happen to education is decades.

The #1 thing I would change? I would make people CARE again. People are complacent. They want change but dont feel like doing it themselves. They dont vote and half the time when they do, they don't do any research and don't really know what they are voting for. It's going to take that passionate American spirit that I love so much to change the things we want changed. We can't continue to sit back and think that Congress and the rest of the government is just going to do it.

@zippylef: gah I totally agree about the NCLB. My husband does as a teacher too.

@regberadaisy: agree with every point. Especially that of icing us first. It has always rubbed me the wrong way when they're sending troops and helpers to countries who supposedly "need" us. Meanwhile we have a whole slew of our own issues!

@Bookworm: yes yes yes!!! Freedom of speech is so important and valuable.

I love America and there are plenty of things I dislike about it. To me, America is family and I love my family even though they drive me crazy sometimes.

I love the First Amendment and the rights we have here. I love our diversity.

I hate that we still say that we're the greatest country. Get over yourself, America! Haha. I've traveled and there are some countries I could definitely become an expat in.

There are too many things I'd like to fix to list here, but healthcare is definitely a biggie. Education, good public education for all citizens, not just the ones who have money.
