i'm working on my amazon registry since we're going to physically register this week. i'm trying to keep it to just the essentials. right now i have the infant mittens on there to prevent scratching, but i'm wondering if they're useful/necessary. did you use them? if so, how frequently and for how long?

They were a necessity for us. LO would brutally dig into her face, even as a newborn. She wore them until they wouldn't fit anymore. Maybe for 2 months?

Nope, didn't get any and didn't use them. Her newborn sleepers (which was all she wore the first few weeks) had the fold over hands, and we just stay on top of her nails so she doesn't do too much damage.

We used them twice I think - she just wouldn't keep them on and despite scratching the heck out of her face, we gave up on them pretty quickly! We did use the fold over hands on her sleepers once in a while but found that getting over our fear of cutting her nails was really the easiest option.

No. We used socks which seemed to stay on better!

We used them for about 2 months. A lot of LO's shirts had "mitts" built into the sleeve too.

I bought some and never used them. LO hates having her hands covered, and even though she's very animated with her hands, she never scratched herself. If you want them @photojane, I still have them and would be willing to send them all to you free!

I didnt have any. At the hospital LO did scratch his face, but the nurses said he would learn not to, which he did very quickly. Plus, baby skin heals super fast! As they get older you just have to keep the nails short.

we're really trying to register for everything essential as we don't have the money to purchase anything other than diapers and wipes!

I bought some and ended up never using them even though her nails are crazy long all the time. I just folded over the sleeve of the sleepers.

Had a few pairs never uses them. Unlike @cvbee, my son still scratches his face at 4 months!

We had a few pairs, I used them in the very early days when we'd go outside and it was a little chilly, but even that was only 4 or 5 times total. I agree w/ PP that baby skin heals super fast, it's incredible. I can't remember what book I read it in, but basically the author said that they have the same nails on the inside that they come out with, so small scratches happen way before they are even out, that's why mother nature makes them heal so fast

People gave me some but I didn't use them. They came off way too easy for them to be considered useful to me. However I love the jammies with the sleeves that can fold over and cover the hands!

My son's nail beds must be long or something because even when we cut his nails short, they were still super sharp! So we used mittens for awhile. An added bonus is that they can help keep hands warm in the colder months!

we didn't use them for both kids. socks over hands work just as well, if not better!

We use them daily. LO does this gross thing where he sticks his finger in his eye...a necessity for us.

We tried them, but DS always pulled them off almost right away. I just sucked it up and cut his nails, or put him in something with a foldover cuff.

we received some as gifts, which we used for about 2 months or so. i probably wouldn't have bought some on my own because, like others, before i had the babies, i heard that socks worked better than mittens and a lot of the newborn clothing came with sleeves that went over hands.

I have to add that after her mittens were too small, I seriously considered buying more or making my own when I realized they only sold infant sized ones. It wasn't about her scratching her face, she has a death grip and would yank downwards. We were afraid she'd scratch her eyes out, literally! She always has her hands on her face, even in all of the ultrasounds so it wasn't anything new.
I decided against getting new mittens at 2 months since she was starting to open her hands and it's not fixed on that scary grip. She scratches her face all the time now, but she has more control and it isn't dangerous, just scratches.

I use them all the time- my LO constantly has his hands by his face and so if we haven't been able to clip his talons (and they seriously grow back in like, two days, it's incredible!) then on go the mittens! As fast as baby skin heals, it still hurts my heart a little to see those angry red scratches on his face!

We put them on her for the car ride home from the hospital and that's it.

DS wore them, we had to, he always scratched his face, and still does!

yes we used them everyday/night for almost 2 months. i preferred the shirts with mittens though, when i could find them!

it seems like it's a toss up, but that i should have some just to be safe. and thanks to the LOVELY @yoursilverlining i'll now have a pair for sweet photobaby! so thankful for that little blessing tonight.

We used them a ton for the first month or so. Like others, I also preferred the outfits that can w/ built-in mittens, but I only had a few of those.

We used socks--and at night the sleeping gowns with hand covers were necessary. Now I just cut his nails every other day and he hasn't worn socks on his hands since the first month.

I didn't need them at all when Sawyer was a newborn, but he is really itchy from eczema right now, so we use them at night/naps because he was scratching in his sleep. I was so glad to have a couple pairs laying around.

We had 2 pairs, complete waste of money for us. He hated having his arms and hands covered anyway. Trimming his nails was easy for us anyway, so scratching wasn't an issue at all.
To cut nails the easy way- I use my nail clippers (I always cut him with baby clippers) and push the bottom lip of the clippers up against the nail, then clip, it traps the part of the nail you want. We use a similar technique in cats and dogs.
