I'm wondering whether anyone has used probiotics for their infant while on oral antibiotics? Should I expect GI problems regardless? Any recommendations for what to use? (I was thinking the Gerber soothe gas drops that include probiotics???)

Yours is probably a little young from what I remember, but I always used yogurt with probiotics on my son after he had a round of antibiotics. But he didn't have antibiotics until he was 6 months old. My ped did say the drops were fine, but that was also around 6 months. He always has GI problems for a couple days when he has a round of antibiotics.

DD hasn’t been on antibiotics but we give her the biogaia probiotic drops every day for reflux. Not sure it’s helped but definitely hasn’t hurt. She’s 3 months old.

I used the probiotic drops when LO was little and was prescribed antibiotics. Just added them to his bottles.

I don't know if they helped at all, or if the antibiotics just worked their way out of LO's system...
About two weeks ago our ped suggested the soothe drops for reflux. He ended up getting a huge dose of antibiotics in the hospital this weekend. Because we were in the hospital, we didn't have the drops with us so he wasn't on them. After getting home, his poop may have been made of fire the way he was crying over it (we suspect from the antibiotics). It resolved shortly after I gave him the probiotics again, but the antibiotics might have already worked their way out and it was a coincidence.

We didn't have any GI issues when our son was on antibiotics. He was on them a few different times for ear infections as a baby. I never gave him a probiotic.

We never did when our daughter took some as an infant. Didn't even occur to me.

We give our 6 month old the gerber soothe drops regularly anyway but he was recently on antibiotics and still had awful diarrhea and then awful diaper rash so I can’t say it helped.

Thank you all!
@Jennibenni: @MaryM: I'm flying with the baby (by myself) for the first time this weekend - long flight with layover - and am just expecting multiple explosive diapers...

@MaryM: Good luck! Honestly the only thing that seemed to help much was getting some diaper free time as much as possible. I’m sorry!

@periwinklebee: I’m sorry, good luck! In my son’s case he didn’t have explosive blowouts just very very frequent poops. But we didn’t have to deal with a lot of blowouts sobmaybe you won’t either!

@periwinklebee: Maybe it's time to go up a size!
The pampers baby dry are the only ones that contained the massive poops lately. I switched him back to breast milk 100% of the time while he was getting better (he was on formula at daycare previously) and of course that made him poop SO MUCH more!
I ended up digging out one of the puppy pads DH took from the hospital when we left (the ones they put under you right after you deliver). He took EVERYTHING and I was like...what are we going to do with that? Bingo. Maybe buy some puppy pads for gross/dirty changes so you can throw them away?

@Jennibenni: We're home for the next four days, so maybe I'll try that! I'm just afraid of him peeing everywhere...

We used them for my little guy when he was super young (10 days, I think?) because I had to take antibiotics for mastitis and he definitely reacted to the antibiotics in my system. It definitely helped (his poops had turned green but went back to normal after about a day of probiotics). We used Gerber soothe drops.

@catlady: thank you, it''s good to hear they worked!
@MaryM: yeah, I've heard from multiple people that even if your LO never has blowouts, they happen on planes (not sure why, maybe the difference in pressure?)

They do make probiotics specifically for infants. I am not home, but I'll take a pic of what we are using when I get home today. We got them at the health food store. Our newborn is on them to counteract gut imbalances due to drug exposure in utero. So far they've helped a lot!

@Mrs. Turtle: That would be awesome! And congrats on the newborn! Is (s)he with you full time now?
@MaryM: I hope the diaper rash clears up soon - poor guy

@periwinklebee: Thanks for the reminder! Here it is: Yes, baby N is with us full time for now. She's 3 weeks tomorrow and doing great, considering all she's been through in her little life.

@Mrs. Turtle: Thank you! And it is such an inspiration what you do for your kids - I admire it so much. It is heartbreaking to think about what your little one has been through in such a short life, but I am so glad you are giving her a loving home now
