I don't know how much of this article I'm actually going to listen to, but it does make me think. Would you replace your LO's pacifier every two weeks?! DD has had the same pacifier for the last 9 months or so!

Interesting! I don't know if I missed the part about what happens when you wash the pacifiers? I would assume a good, hot wash in the dishwasher would eliminate the bacteria?
I want to avoid using a paci as much as I can, but I will register for 2 just in case I need them.

I think periodically sanitizing the soother would be just fine. We actually gather, and hand wash all soothers every day, and throw them all in the microwave sterilizer every week. It only takes a few minutes, then I re-distribute them once they are all clean and dry.

This is interesting... I run the binkys through the dishwasher every night but it sounds like the study is saying that over time the plastic gets more porous and bacteria and fungus can enter into tiny openings. So I'm not sure if the conclusion is that even boiling or sanitizing is not sufficient?

Gross. I never gave LO a paci and won't be giving baby 2 one either. If I were to give my LO a paci I'd sterilize it by boiling every night.

I use our sterilizing machine like there's no tomorrow. So I sterilize her pacifiers every night!

Wait a minute...it says the same thing about retainers! I wonder if I should be sterilizing my retainer too!

Meh. I probably don't sterilize pacifiers as often as I should but my LO puts everything in his mouth these days and I'm sure a lot of it is way dirtier than his paci! I can only protect him from so much!

@banana: lol gross. I've had my retainers for a decade...I soaked them in Listerine a few times.

I run LO's pacis under hot water now and again, but nothing too extreme. If they fall on the floor at home I don't always wash them...oops. I will probably throw them out after a few months though and get her new ones.

@banana: NO don't do that!! Retainers can't be sterilized with steam or boiling water. They'll melt! When I had mine, my ortho told me to soak them in listerine once a week

Well, I bought a ton of pacis so that we always had a clean one available. No one paci ever got used daily so that cut down on wear and tear. Plus we sterilized the used ones evey night. It seems crazy to only use a paci for 2 weeks anyway.

The way I see it, there are germs and bacteria on absolutely everything and there's only so much you can do to protect your LO from bacteria. I run LO's pacis under hot water every night (our water is SUPER hot - 75 C, we've asked for it to be turned down but the housing association said no) and let them soak in hot soapy water every few days. We also have pacifier wipes for if/when they fall on the ground when we're out in public. I do replace them every three months or so.

Meh. I'm not really a germophobe. Our daughter puts all kinds of things in her mouth, and I wash the paci all the time, so I figure that's the least of our problems. Actually, DD seems to have the best immune system in our family right now, so she's doing something right!

I sterilize them every night and wipe them with a paci wipe if we are out. They end up getting lost pretty frequently so they get replaced every few weeks.

@LivsMama: good to know! I was telling my DH we should sterilize our retainers. I have listerine so I'm gonna soak them tonight!

@HeatherlovesKenny: I know! so gross! i need to get new retainers actually. one of my bottom teeth is starting to move.

Meh.. I was them every night and replace them every 2-3 months. What doesn't kill her only makes her stronger. I'm sure there are way worse things that she touches at daycare or out in public.
