I'm killing time reading through HB waiting to find out if I got this new position at work or not. They said I would know today, and they are on PST while I'm on EST.
Ack!!! I just want to know either way at this point!

@HolisticMama: It's an internal posting, they said I would know today. I'm just super super anxious lol I want to know no matter the outcome. I'm sure my boss is dying to find out if she needs to replace me or not too!

zomg ok. so the manager of new department asked me how much vacation I currently get (she already knows what I make from my file) and that she's going to talk to my current manager.

@AmeliaBedilia: haha yes! I called a good friend of mine who's a VP at another company for his advice on how to negotiate pay. I've never had to before so I want to prep myself in case it's not what I want.

@babycanuck: I am so excited for you. I applied for a new job and interviewed back in November. I have heard from many people in the know that they are EXTREMELY slow, and it might take another couple months. So I'm living a little vicariously. Also distracting myself- trying really hard not to POAS til DH is home. Looking forward to a post that says you got it and you're thrilled.

@AmeliaBedilia: !!! I'm going to sit here until you post your poas result!

@babycanuck: I'm going to sit here until you post your job result! I didn't mean to threadjack. My temp is down, but total lack of my PMS symptoms which NEVER happens. Fatigued and lots of CM. DH is off tomorrow, so should be home late tonight, so it won't be for hours. So we are going to focus on your new job!

@AmeliaBedilia: haha I'm sure I won't see anything from them until tomorrow so tomorrow morning will be a crapload of good posts!

@babycanuck: Totally kept scrolling down hoping to see a response! I think you got it based on the further questioning today, now its just a matter of negotiations....good luck

@littlek: I hope so!!! I've reached out to some hr friends for advice on negotiating salary because I've never done it.
pomegranate / 3105 posts
ugh! I wish people would call me back lol I have no idea how to negotiate for salary if they don't offer me what I"m looking for. Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?
I think they're going to offer me more vacation and less money...I don't care for the extra vacation, I hardly take vacation now. I don't know that for a fact but I want to be ready.

@babycanuck: There are some posts on HB about negotiating salary. Basically do some research and build a case for why you deserve what you're asking for - ie on salary.com, glassdoor.com, whatever you can find to prove someone of your skills and abilities deserves to make $x. When they make an offer, if it's not what you want, you can counter something higher and back it up.

@JoJoGirl: I definitely did some research and I think I'm most unsure of wording...how do I say it.
"While I appreciate the offer I was wondering if there was wiggle room on salary? I've done some research and an average salary for someone in this type of position is $X to $X?" Sounds so stupid!
cantaloupe / 6206 posts
@babycanuck: NO do NOT ask if there is wiggle room! Feel confident that you deserve more and are entitled to more.
"Thank you so much for the offer and I'm really excited about the prospect of working for you. From my research, the going market value for someone with my experience and abilities is closer to $x"
It's so hard to say but so important. I bet if you google around "salary negotiation" you can find some good strong wording!

@babycanuck: I might try to come across a little stronger...
While I appreciate the offer, I'm concerned about the salary. I've done some research and an average salary for someone in this type of position is $X to $X. Are you able to offer X? (and at this point, if they've offered you more vacation, you could say you would take X number of vacation days instead).

@tinyperson: My husband coached me through my first ever salary negotiation at my current job. It was the hardest thing I ever did but it worked! I counter-offered something a bit over the top and they met me halfway!

Be assertive and ask for a little more than you think you're worth. Lots of studies suggest that women make less because we don't negotiate. I hate it, but it's essential. Good luck!

@babycanuck: any news?! Eeek! I have people ask for more money all the time. I always tell them that it never hurts to ask! The worst they can do is say no
grapefruit / 4136 posts
@AmeliaBedilia: agreed! Women almost never ask for more $$ but men almost always do!

Good luck! I could have written your post as I am waiting for news too and was told I should hear this week. The waiting game is the worst! I hope you get the position and don't have to do much negotiating.

@babyjmama: No news!!! I have no idea if they spoke to my boss either, she's in another office today. I spoke to an ex employee and she gave me a bunch of stuff to say too, so since the negotiations are over the phone they won't see how nervous I am.

@babycanuck: blast! Posts like these always make me realize how long the hiring process takes and that I need to get my ass in gear at work!

I GOT IT!!! I made one small mistake saying I wanted closer to $x, they said what's your number and I went 2k under the max but that's ok!!! 10k more than I make now and a 5% bonus!
