Do I bring a gift? And if so, what? I'm planning on bringing cookies, its a BBQ.

I think the cookies are enough....or a bottle of wine or something to,go,with the cookies. I had a friend that had a divorce party.....just because she'd been trying to divorce him for years and he made it very, very difficult (he was in jail, too...lots of fun stuff in that relationship).

Champagne? Martini glasses and mix? Anything alcohol related!

I've never heard of this. I think booze sounds appropriate. Maybe matches to burn pictures and things?

@Rainbow Sprinkles: @sorrycharlie: lol i was wondering this too... I've never heard of a divorce party!

@Rainbow Sprinkles: @sorrycharlie: @Bookworm: my friend had one. The guy cheated on her so she wanted to celebrate not being with the bum anymore!

@Andrea: so do u throw a party at your house with all your girlfriends once the divorce is final?
GOLD / wonderful coffee bean / 18478 posts
@Rainbow Sprinkles: yup! Well, hers was just a big get together at a bar!

I think sweets or booze us always appropriate for divorce parties. One of my sister's bffs had tshirts made to commemorate the occasion.

@artbee: um. what? People have parties for divorces now?
Yeah....cookies are enough! No gifts!

Yes I've never heard of this.
I guess you could bring a gift certificate to match.com (or eharmony to support WB) as a gift!

seriously?? I've NEVER heard of this!! soooo weird.

@Andrea: sadly i can beat your story. Not only did he cheat on her.... But he got the other girl pregnant. When they were still together.
She had a rough time actually getting the divorce because he never showed up to court, so she is celebrating that it's finally all over.

@artbee: ohmygosh. Poor thing. Booze. Lots and lots of booze! And chocolate.

A normal, small hostess gift seems reasonable. Cookies will be fine.
I totally get why your friend would have a celebration. After my patents divorce was finalized my mom's 55th birthday party was her "emancipation" party as she called it. The recently finalized divorce was a major theme. She even reddened it when she c thanked her guests for coming.

@artbee: poor girl!! I know, a number of my friends have had their divorces drag and drag. I can see why they would want to celebrate by the time it is all officially over!!

@artbee: Wine, bring wine
I had a "divorce party" it almost took 2 years to be finalized due to jail time and conflicting court dates. My ex turned into the biggest pos to walk this earth. I celebrated very nicely
My now husband also had a divorce party, haha!

Sounds like this is one of those times that any type of booze would be appreciated for celebratory drinks.

@artbee: @StbHisMrs: Wow! I'm glad I live in Texas... My ex never had to show for court (he was incarcerated anyways)... As long as I made it public (coulda posted it on the court bulletin board if I wanted) & he didn't contest it within a certain window I didn't need his signature or anything! Since he was incarcerated & couldn't really say anything my attorney took REAL good care of me in regards to visitation & such. Tehe.

@runsyellowlites: wow! Lucky lucky! Mine had an attorney and contested everything.

I've heard of these...always sort of strike me as odd. I think no gifts are appropriate; I don't really understand celebrating the end of a marriage. I've seen multiple divorces in my own family, including my parents (mom twice) and they are always shrouded in sadness and pain. I guess maybe that's the reason for the "party?" To take their mind off things and look toward the future? I hope your friend is doing OK!

@erinpye: Yea, even in my case I wasn't celebrating & don't think I'd ever attend one.

Dang, I wish I had a divorce party. I know I was relieved when it was finalized but those parties weren't popular back then (2005).
Cookies are perfect!

I would have loved this when I got officially divorced from my ex, lol. I think me and my bff just drank a lot, lol.
Chocolate and booze sounds great.

I also would have loved a divorce party!
I definitely say bring booze. And sweets.

I had a divorce party and it was wonderful! Went to it straight from the court house.
To answer your question, booze and chocolate is always the answer
