My SIL has one for my nephew. He has a hyperthyroid issue where his weight needs to be monitored.

As for other babies, I don't know. I did always wonder if this was a must need item for weighing babies to see how much they have eaten.

No. I never considered it either. As long as your LO is having enough wet diapers and such, they're eating enough and should be gaining fine.

We have one but it was kind of just for fun. DH liked to know how much she weighed. I don't know why!

Do you have access to a mother's consulting service? We do, and can go once a month for free until age 5 to weigh and ask questions, so I didn't consider it. If I didn't, I would strongly consider it.

We did not purchase one but I went to a breast feeding support group twice a week where we would do a pre and post weight.

Honestly, they aren't all that accurate. Im glad I was able to see how much she was taking but I think if I had one at home I would drive myself crazy.

Remember you can always talk to your pediatricians office about stopping by and setting LO on the scale. I know our office let us do that at one point (no appointment, no cost, etc).

I bought a baby scale when we first started breastfeeding at 4 weeks (supply issues) because I felt like LO was eating around the clock and I didn't have enough milk for him. The scale only increased my paranoia so I returned it after 2 days and I definitely don't miss it now!

We didn't get one either.

@Sammyfab: I agree, in those early weeks of breast feeding they can be taking as little as 1-2 ounces of milk. Those scales are great, but anything can throw them off (example if their arm is laying on the scale for the pre weight and then laying off to the side for the post weight the ounces may be off).

And they are pretty little. I would say after 6 weeks the baby is big and its hard to get an accurate weight to the ounce for pre/post weights.

No, I wouldn't consider it a must have item. I didn't get one and I breastfed. It's probably more of a nice to have.

I don't know anyone who owns a baby scale; plus our doctor will weigh the kids any time, free of charge, if we really wanted to know.

Nope. When she was first born the doctors office welcomed me to take her in as much as I wanted to make sure breastfeeding & weight gain were going well.

definitely not a must have item. i got one and it was fun to weigh charlie each week to see how much weight he gained. but it was just something that took up space.

if your baby is underweight and you need to monitor how much they're gaining and how much they're taking in a feeding (by weighing before and after a feeding), but it really is totally unnecessary.

No, I think you would only end up obsessing over weight and feeding amounts. Sometimes not knowing is a better thing.

We had bf/jaundice issues at first, but had frequent appointments with the pediatrician and lactation consultant meant that he got weighed every other day or so and we monitored things just fine that way.

If you really need one, you can rent them by the week or month from many pumping supply places. You shouldn't need it for very long unless there are bigger issues.
