No. We didn't get her one last year.....ooops.
wonderful cherry / 21504 posts
No. I've always gotten them for my 3 year old but I don't think it's as important. I mean, the flu shot should protect you from this year's flu. The other vaccines hopefully protect them for way longer against more serious illnesses.

Yes. I'm almost 10 weeks pregnant and I'm terrified about getting the flu. Also scared about my 19 month old getting it... the flu can be scary!
eggplant / 11716 posts
We have to, or the oldest can't go to Pres-school. So I scheduled their flu shots for this Friday right after I get off work. I get one every year since I work in a school and haven't gotten the legit flu in years. My husband never gets one, and has gotten the flu every other year since we met. I want to force him to do it this year. Last winter, he got the flu and was out of work for about 4 days, and miserable at work another 3 days after that. He also got the flu a week before our wedding and had a 104 degree fever for 3 days, couldn't move or do anything/help in any way. Was weak on the actual day.
This thread is going to make me force him to go. With my insurance it's FREE. He's just lazy, there's no other excuse.

Yes, it's important to me, I prioritize getting them. I don't even know if it's required or public school, but I brought my son regardless.
My husband and I get them through work, he always reminds me of the sign ups.

@Anagram: It's painless! Tell him a stranger on the internet (me) didn't even realize the nurse was finished with the shot I have to drag my husband as well.
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
@ocean81: Haha, mine was anything but painless, I swear the nurse threw the needle at my arm like a dart. I couldn't lift my arm for three days!
But you know what, I would rather deal with that than be out of commission. What about nasal mist, is that an option for adults?
coconut / 8854 posts
Nope. I never get the flu shot, and I don't plan on having my DD get it again either.
eggplant / 11716 posts
@ocean81: he doesn't care about needles. He's just lazy and doesn't want to physically go and get them. But now that even pharmacies give them, he has 0 excuse. He walks past probably 3 pharmacies a day, going to and from work.
watermelon / 14467 posts
Yep. I had the flu in 2010. It was awful. I don't want to do that again.
grapefruit / 4085 posts
Yes - we get them every year, esp now that M's in school. I've never had the flu and want to keep it that way!
pomelo / 5573 posts
@looch: Me too, mine hurt for days, it felt like I'd been punched hard in the arm.
I know it's important and I don't prioritize it because....I don't even know. The first year for B I got the first one and didn't go back for the booster, last year I didn't get it at all. This year I'm going to make sure we all do it.
pomegranate / 3127 posts
Yes, for now. The kids are in day care so they're exposed to all kinds of germs. I think the flu is most dangerous for kids under five, so they're definitely getting the shot till then. Maybe not afterwards.
DD had the flu at eight months when she hadn't had the shot yet. It sucked. She was on fever suppressants non stop for three days, and as soon as they wore off she'd spike a fever of 103. It didn't help that half the time, she threw up the medication and I was scared to give it again and overdose. Definitely don't want to go there again.
pear / 1648 posts
Yes. I don't have enough vacation time for the flu if I get it, let alone the rest of my family. If there was a vaccine against hand-foot-mouth disease I would get that too - I was out for a week
But I do wish they would make it easier to access for little ones. After age 2, you'd think it would be safe for a pharmacist to administer the vaccine...

I wouldn't say it's AS important, but it's definitely important to me. I usually go early in the season (so the boys have already had theirs this year), but if I just can't get myself together, DS1's annual well check is always in December, so I can get them then. I always get mine around the same time (late September-ish) at the pharmacy--and then I get a 10% off a grocery trip card, too--bonus!
grapefruit / 4988 posts
It's not the same level of importance to me as vaccines, but we make sure everyone gets one each year. We all had the flu a couple years ago and it was one of the most miserable experiences ever (even though we had all had shots! but it was well known to not be a great formulation that year).
pineapple / 12793 posts
I think they're important but we didn't get them last year even though I was pregnant. We were literally sick every time we had appointments to get them. Last winter sucked.
squash / 13764 posts
Yes definitely important, We all get them. Only DH and I are left, the kids just got them.
GOLD / watermelon / 14076 posts
I don't know that I'd say they're as important as vaccines (to us), but we definitely prioritize getting them. We've all already gotten ours this year.
grapefruit / 4278 posts
Yes, we all get them. DH and I both have clinics at work to be able to get them for free. I have a friend from college who died from the flu, it's important to me.
apricot / 431 posts
@looch: @erinbaderin: Ok, I spoke to soon. The actual shot didn't hurt, but now it hurts to lift my arm!
pear / 1767 posts
My son got the flu mist last year and then got the flu in March. It was actually pretty scary. His temperature shot up to 103.9 and the urgent care place almost sent us to the ER before I begged them to do an influenza test. My son vomited in the car on the way home. I was 6 weeks pregnant at the time and fortunately didn't get it (though I'd had the flu shot in the fall). The whole thing was scary so we're definitely getting a flu shot (no more flu mist for us).
pomegranate / 3438 posts
We didn't get them the last two years because I kept forgetting. But I made sure everyone got one this year because I am due with a December baby.
nectarine / 2173 posts
We get all vaccines but especially the flu shot. You're more likely to get the flu than measles, mumps, etc so why do people consider this one optional? Flu can be deadly.
grapefruit / 4770 posts
No, we decline each year, and will continue to do so as long as it's not required for public school.
nectarine / 2243 posts
@sapphire: THIS. exactly my thoughts.
I like to think in terms of the relative risk of things. If something lowers my family's chance of catching something potentially deadly or harmful, I'm going to do it. And the likelihood of a serious complication from the flu vaccine is almost nonexistant.
pear / 1547 posts
Yes. The flu is something that circulates regularly and I have taken care of patients in the ICU from the flu. I don't mess around with it!
nectarine / 2784 posts
The first time I got a flu shot I had a bad reaction- fever, aches, general misery for the next day. I didn't get it again for the next few years after that. Then I realized how dumb it was of me to avoid the shot just for >24 hours of fake flu. I get it every year now and actually my reaction to it since has just been a sore arm and a few hours of mild flu-like achiness.
hostess / cantaloupe / 6486 posts
No but the girls are still at the age where we have enough well visits that we don't have to make a special trip to get them vaccinated. I got the flu shot the last 3 years but I have no idea if I'll get around to it this year
cantaloupe / 6017 posts
Yes, although I still haven't gotten mine this year
With a newborn in the house, a preschooler at school twice a week, and a husband who is a pediatrician (sick kids alllll day) it's important to me to do whatever we can to stay healthy and stop the spread of viruses!!!
honeydew / 7504 posts
@sapphire: Yup. Same. Getting the kids their flu shots (and making sure my husband gets it) is absolutely a priority for me.
cantaloupe / 6669 posts
No, it's not. I'm not saying it isn't important at all, but I mentally prioritize vaccinations that are required for school.
persimmon / 1445 posts
It's not AS important to me as other vaccines, but it is still very high up there. I make it a priority every year since having DD and I make sure my husband gets one too. I would feel awful if my baby got really sick because I didn't get her a quick and free shot, and I can't properly care for her if I'm sick.
honeydew / 7463 posts
I wouldn't label it as the same level of importance, but I do intend to get it for him every year. Fortunately his birthday is in September so it's always available at his well visit and they offer it to me. So it's actually pretty easy.
persimmon / 1385 posts
@sapphire: Yep. DH is a ER Nurse and this is totally his thought on it. I would probably let it slide out of the laziness, but he makes sure we're on it and I'm glad.
pear / 1986 posts
I never got it before having DD, but we have all gotten it ever since. I was the first this year since I am pregnant, then DH got his at CVS. DD just got hers this past weekend because her pediatrician had run out for about two weeks. My arm was sore, and I know DD's thigh is sore, but I definitely do NOT want us to get the flu so it is worth it.
