I'm working on starting one in our area. I'm really excited to be able to make babywearing more accessible in our community!

What does the I stand for? I thought of the Baltimore airport when I saw BWI. I want to wear LO #2 when he/she gets here.

I went to a few meetings here in Houston but never became a member per se.

@swedishfish: Babywearing International We have a large local BW group, but becoming BWI official will give us a lot of options and direction.

I'm not, but I may join when #2 is born. The meetings are pretty inconvenient for me, but we have a huge chapter!

Good luck!
I wanted to join, and attended a few meetings, but I didn't find our local chapter to be very welcoming if you didn't cloth diaper/blw/extended BF. It's sad, because you don't have to be crunch to enjoy baby wearing. I'm sure I'm not the first potential member to be turned off.
I know you'll keep your group friendly and non-judgmental!

I would love to join one but there are none locally, and I'm not experienced/skilled enough to start one myself.

I am, but I haven't been to a formal meeting because they aren't convenient (location or time-wise). I think it's great that you are starting one!

@rahlyrah: I hate that! There are 8 of us starting it who run the gamut in terms of crunchiness, so I think that will help.

Get this - I have to take a test to get certified to teach! I have to demonstrate several types of carries with all the different varieties of carriers. I'm sure I will have to bribe C to participate

My local chapter seems very...what's the word...pretentious, maybe. They are all about expensive woven wraps and think strollers are the devil. I didn't get a good vibe. I love my Ergo (which seems sub par to them) but have borrowed a ring sling from a friend so I might go to another meeting to ensure I use it properly.
@grizz: I'm sure you and C will do great! I love your carry pics!

I belong to the one here in Austin. They have soooo many different events!

@wheres_c: I joined their group this weekend just in case I'm SO incredibly impressed!

I wanted to back when DS was first born, but the meeting times are difficult and all over the place. And after being in the Facebook groups for a while I'm kind of turned off by some things and I'm afraid the in person group would be similar. I still love wearing D though .

I have not, but DH was approached by someone who invited him to join a babywearing group while he was wearing LO. I do not know which one, but the meetings are pretty infrequent, so I do not think he has gone yet. He is really not crunchy, but enjoys babywearing. Other parenting groups have been quite exclusionary of DH as a SAHD.

@ShootingStar: Do you mind telling me the things that are a turn off in your local group? I'm trying to set this up to be cognizant of blind spots from the get-go.

We went to several meetings, but never joined. I loved seeing the different carriers demonstrated and having troubleshooting. Our chapter never seemed judgmental, which is lucky because I'm not fancy enough to use a wrap, haha! No seriously, I still don't understand what a conversion is.

@grizz: I didn't realize this existed. Not to be dense, but what is the purpose of a bwi group? What would make baby wearing more accessible? I hope this doesn't sound flippant or sarcastic, it's not!- just trying to figure out what the group does.
The closest I came to a "group" was the baby wearing expert at Isis looking at my moby wrap for me. I was the "expert" in my new moms group and helped a couple people with their moby wraps, but mostly I learn about it on here.

@Foodnerd81: We will have a lending library for people to borrow and try different carriers, meet-ups to learn how to use different carriers, troubleshooting, outings, etc. it's basically what we're doing now, but BWI will offer us some structure, legal protection, and support. So far I've been trying to diversify our meet-ups, and set up different things for moms who have things in common - for example, we have several babies who have special medical considerations, have trach tubes in, etc. I'm setting up a special meeting for them with an occupational therapist in attendance, as well as one of our instructors who can help them learn carries that accommodate their babies medical equipment, like hip carries. Last week we did a meet-up for moms of newborns.

I belong to my local chapter--Southeastern PA. They were a large babywearing group until about a year ago. I love it and I am so happy I joined!

@grizz: At the time that I was interested in joining the meetings just seemed...difficult. They were either during the day or really far away/inconvenient location. The group serves a large metro area so I'm sure it's hard to make everyone happy.
I would still like to join one, but I worry that I won't really fit in. I'm not at all crunchy (I stopped BFing before a year, I'm a CD drop out, we sleep trained, don't make our own baby food, etc). And I think there are plenty of times and places where a stroller is way more helpful and appropriate than trying to wear DS. Plus I don't really care if other people babywear or not. It seems like on the Facebook groups are so WEAR ALL THE BABIES/Down with strollers!!!. But I was interested because I'd love to get some help with my carries and try out some new things.

There is one in town that I would love to join, but all the meetings are super inconvenient for me. They are either during the day for the SAH moms or in the evening right at the time that LO goes to bed. All the meetings are on weekdays as well, and after working all day I am not inclined to go out to another meeting.

@avivoca: yes ours isn't BWI but yea 2 meetings a month one at like 10am and one at 6 pm. DS goes down at 7 and I'm 30 mins from the meeting location so it just doesn't work. I did try one and I think I just picked a bad meeting but it was in a restaurant and it was just the girls talking there was very little about babywearing.

Yes! I went to a lot of meetings in the beginning, but they aren't that convenient for me, so I haven't been in awhile. There is a lending library (which is awesome) and the mamas are super nice and helpful.

My app is in. Taking the test soon! This probably sounds crazy, but if anybody needs help with a carrier, I'd be happy to do a session via Skype or Facetime since I need my teaching skills critiqued. If you would like one, wall me or write me on Facebook
