Haha! Just started watching The Wire, and man does this show make Baltimore look really scary!!!!
Is it a rough city in real life?
Also, was anyone else into this show? We're only a couple of episodes in and it doesn't have me hooked yet.

@sslm: This is my favorite show of all time. The first episodes of the 1st season are kinda slow but it gets better! Season 1 and 3 are my favorites.
I have no idea about Baltimore!

The Wire is AMAZING!! Season 4 is the best, IMO--but they're all good!! Also have no idea about Baltimore IRL

I haven't ever watched the wire but I grew up in or around Baltimore. It has some really lovely parts but they definitely struggle with crime. The Inner Harbor is a water from area with shops and restaurants and lots of opportunities to go on boats (water taxis, tour boats, dinner cruises, old war ship) plus a pretty good science center and the National Aquarium.
I wouldn't hesitate to visit with little ones or really even to live there but I don't know that I would just go exploring the whole city by myself. But I also live just outside Detroit so take my opinion with a grain of salt

I live in Baltimore, it really isn't that scary!
The Wire is an awesome show, and it is pretty accurate, but only for a certain section of the city. Most of our crime is drug related and between drug dealers. A majority of the city is perfectly safe and pretty freakin' awesome! I love my city

@autumnlove: me toooo!! His story was so sad though That whole season makes me sad.

@rahlyrah: Yeah, I guess that's true of most cities (good parts/bad parts). I figured it was probably only showing a portion of the city, but it makes it look really bad!!

@sslm: I have to agree with others. The Wire is my favorite drama ever. The plot and character development are top notch. We live in DC, and enjoy visiting Baltimore, but the teachers that relocate from there say it's rough in some parts (but anything is rougher than northern VA)

Homicide: Life on the Streets is also set there! And it also makes the place look awful. IDK about nowadays, but I think it was pretty bad in the 80s and 90s.

Hahaha. No! Baltimore is such a beautiful city. The Wire is showing the bad areas, all cities have them. I miss living there so much, it is such an amazing city. Harbor, Fells Point, Ravens, Orioles. Sigh. I left part of my heart there.

We used to live in Baltimore, and I couldn't watch The Wire because I recognized every street and landmark!
Baltimore is a great city with so many fun things to do - I miss it! But you definitely feel the "roughness" hang over you like a cloud, even in the nice parts. People are very aware of their surroundings and not as friendly and trusting as they are in Nashville, where I live now. But honestly we live in a more dangerous part of town in Nashville than we did in Baltimore!

I spend a fair amount of time in Baltimore. I've found people there to be very hospitable and though I've wandered through some rough areas, I never personally felt unsafe.
We've taken Lala to the National Aquarium which she loves and I love the diversity.
I remember the first time I was there, I was presenting at a conference, and I got to the hotel really late one night. I had asked at the front desk about whether there was anything to eat that late in the area (which wasn't super safe to walk that late). The sweet guys at the front desk looked at each other and said, "We were gonna order pizza tonight anyway. Want to share with us?" It was so nice of them and I felt that there was a certain hospitality there where folks are looking out for each other. You don't feel that everywhere!

I don't know anything about the show, but I don't mind being in Baltimore. It definitely feels "rougher" but there are some nice parts. But, I love DC and it's not that much better

I think all cities have high crime or bad areas. I've been to Baltimore's inner harbor and it's a great area for families.

I used to live in Baltimore and while there are some nice parts there are a lot of rough parts.
Lots of drugs and drug related crimes.
I got mugged on my front doorstep and had my car broken into several times.

@hilsy85: Season 4 was soo good. Season 1 and 3 were good too. Ahh, i miss it so much!
I was in Baltimore in 1991, and it was not a good experience. A bunch of guys threw beer bottles at our car as we were driving by!

@Mrs. Jacks: Aw, what a great story! You are making me miss Baltimore. I can't wait to take our kids back to the Inner Harbor, the National Aquarium, Fells Point... okay, now I really miss it!
@travelingbrit: We were lucky that the worst experience with crime that we had was a broken car window, but we unfortunately had multiple friends that had their houses broken into, and even a couple friends that were held up. I don't think the crime rate is really that much worse in Baltimore, but people seem more desperate. Like I said earlier, we actually live in a "rough" part of Nashville, but I feel a lot safer and more relaxed day to day.

I grew up outside of Baltimore and I think the tricky thing about it is that there doesn't seem to be so much a "bad area" of town as there are "bad streets" - its easy to be someplace perfectly safe and veer very quickly into a place you shouldn't really be. As others said, inner harbor is totally safe in the daytime but it's always smart to use caution in your actions and watch your belongings in any city.

@PinkElephant: that is so true. I lived in Bolton Hill, a ten minute walk from the shops at Charles Village. In order to get there I had to walk past North Ave. Its amazing how quickly it can go from good to bad to good again

@daniellemybelle: I agree with you about desperation. Its almost as if some of them want to be caught because its a warm roof over their heads.

I grew up in the DC area and visited Baltimore many times. You got me curious with this question so I looked up some stats (yes, I'm a nerd, haha). My answer without any stats would have been, there are bad parts of Baltimore like NYC or DC, but as a whole it's fine. According to the stats, though, it is actually the city with the fifth highest rate of violent crime, above DC (#9) and waaaay above NYC (which barely makes it into the top 50, interestingly enough). This surprised me! I do think that there are many parts of Baltimore that are very safe, though, and great places to live. I have several friends who live there and they love it.
