In our little town, no so much. When you head to the nearby city, much more diversity!

Our city is very diverse, though when you think of it, you think of lily white. It's increasingly Hispanic, PAC islander, gay, and American Indian. We also have a robust refugee population, with Burmese, Somali, Ethiopian and Middle Eastern populations. I love my city!

I think my city is pretty diverse for its size. We have a huge Navy base though so that helps.

I'd say so. Some groups are more common than others but I'd say my city is diverse. Large Hispanic population, various Asian populations, some Middle Eastern as well. It really just depends on what part of town you're in.

The suburb of Dallas I live in is pretty diverse. My neighborhood alone has a lot of diversity.

@Mrs. Jacks: I love your city, too!
It is surprisingly culturally diverse for its size and location. But it is also a college town, which is what accounts for a lot of the diversity!
ETA the surprisingly diverse bit is for where I live now, but it also applies to Mrs. Jacks town!

I live in one of the most culturally diverse areas of Brooklyn! I actually think I read somewhere that it's the most ethnically diverse area of Brooklyn.
ETA: I live in a building that is primarily Polish and Russian. Our neighborhood playground looks like the United Nations: women in hijabs, Orthodox Jewish women, women in saris; we have a lot of Central American, South Asian, Chinese, Irish, Italian, and Caribbean people.

The neighborhood where I live is not super diverse--I'd say it skews majorly to South Asian and East Asian (mainly south asian). But I guess the city as a whole is diverse.
The small town where my job is is not that diverse. Mostly white, pretty evenly mixed between WASPS and Jewish students.

Yes. We live in a small city, but some of the surrounding towns- not so much.

@Mrs. Jacks: It's pretty awesome. We are pretty sure that if we stay in NYC we will stay in this neighborhood so that LO is immersed in all of this diversity. While NYC can be very diverse, it can also be very separate.

Not at all. We live in a very small town in northern Michigan and its a huge change from the suburbs of Detroit where I grew up (the town I grew up in has the largest Middle Eastern community in the US).

@mrsjazz: I hated that about Seattle. Very diverse but very segregated. Our new city is much more integrated and I love it!
My family is from Brooklyn going back to the early 1800's, so it is near and dear to my heart. I have the addresses of many of the buildings that they lived in.

No
I've always lived in pretty diverse places before, but now I live in rural Iowa, so there is very little diversity. I do work in a college town, so there is a fair amount of diversity associated with the college, but as soon as you get away from the college bubble it is the whitest place I have every lived.

Moderately. The African-American population is admittedly rather low, especially in comparison to where I went to college. However, we live in a very liberal city that celebrates diversity, in every which way, so it works out.

Pretty diverse. DC is diverse, my specific neighborhood is diverse, the larger DC metro area is not quite so diverse.

Yep, I'd say so. I remember when my sister moved here, she asked what the red license plates with white letters meant. Her face when I told her those were diplomatic plates were priceless.

pretty much so. i live in vancouver.
when i worked on the west side of the city, over half my students were mixed kids (mostly a chinese + caucasian mix). i thought that was so interesting! it's so normal in that neighbourhood! i guess i shouldn't be too surprised cause my own LO's are the same mix as well
nice to know they definitely won't be the only ones in the city.

I think so, Atl seems to have a good mix of cultures and people.

Charlotte is a pretty diverse area, but the little town I live in (until tomorrow!) isn't, so much. The area we're planning on ultimately move to is more diverse.

Definitely. We have a huge aboriginal population here, as well as a strong Asian population, primarily Chinese, Vietnamese, Indian, Malaysian, Indonesian, and Thai, due to our close proximity to Asia. I love it.
wonderful pea / 17279 posts
Yes. There are lots of first or second generation people from Central and South America as well as the Carribean Islands. The further North you travel in South Florida the diversity wanes.

@Mrs. Jacks: I had no idea about the refugee population, but there's actually a pretty big group here from different countries! A few people at my husband's office are refugees who have naturalized.

My town is split pretty evenly between being about half white and half AA.
We don't have many other races here according to our stats, but it sure seems like there are a lot of Hispanic people here.
I imagine it'd be hard to calculate it though because we're a military base so people are always coming and going.

No. Ethnic hair care where I live is for anyone who has a natural color other than blond. We have to really represent diversity of all kinds in our literature, because I don't want the girls to have a geographically limited world view.

Not really, although I will say in the last few years it has definitely gotten better! We have a huge university where we live that brings in different cultures, and luckily our neighborhood has some diversity so our kids will see it...that is until we move to our hometown again and then it will completely reverse.
I plan on doing my best to raise them to see people for who they are not what they look like, because to be honest in our small towns racism unfortunately still lives on, and I hate it. It makes me cringe at times, luckily our families are not!

Supposedly we have some ethnic diversity in the area (a few East/South Asian and Jewish families), which I don't really see a lot of but it's still more than what a lot of other suburbs in the region have. I guess these days that wouldn't really be considered diverse!

Nope, mostly white in my town, I'm pretty sure I am one of like 2 Asians that live in the town.

I've only been in our city for a few years, and while it is somewhat diverse - I wish it was less segregated.
It's actually something I've been thinking a lot about lately because if we decide to adopt (and we would be open to any race) I would like to have people in our lives that our children could relate to and go to with questions we wouldn't be able to answer.
