On my side, always. Even a quick drop in usually involves a beer. DH's side we will have a drink with dinner but nothing really besides that.

Totally normal. I mean, if it is a meal time other than breakfast. And even if it is breakfast, if it is a holiday, you can expect to be offered a mimosa.

Not necessarily at my parents because my dad is a recovering alcoholic. (Although my mom still drinks) but at my brother's yes. And all holidays there is generally wine.

I don't know if I'd say it's free flowing but with both families there's usually beer/wine available if someone wants it.

There's usually beers for the men, but honestly no half of my family aren't big drinkers. Christmas there may be some wine or champagne. I like wine and the occasional beer but it's not odd to have family get togethers sans alcohol

No. My parents never drink. I have only seen MIL and SIL have a drink once and we were on vacation at the beach.

Yes. My uncles co own a u brew, so there's always wine and beer at our gatherings.

Yes, completely normal for us on both sides to have beer and/or wine, not really hard alcohol.

Yup! Beer and wine is always available. Liquor comes out for celebrations like bdays, even if it's the kiddo's bday. lol

Our parents are all big wine drinkers. rarely tipsy at all (I saw my mom drunk like once growing up) but they're all very much social drinkers

If someone's not drinking, they're obviously pregnant. My family's motto.

yes! although its funny, my DH and I have been together for 15 years. His parents were pretty conservative at the start and alcohol was rarely around unless we were drinking it. I remember my MIL watering down sangria I made with an entire 2L bottle of sprite (after I had already assembled the low alcohol sangria). Anyway, fast forward 15 years later, several moves around the world, grandkids, retirement, health events.....BOOM they are the first ones to get the wine out at 4:01 pm on a tuesday. It has been hilarious to watch. They have also become more liberal (forget even mentioning gay rights 15 years ago... now...hey why not who cares. Love is love!!! ok well not quite but we are getting there with them).

On my side there is always beer or wine. On my husband's side, we have to buy wine since my ILs rarely drink, but my BILs always have beer and wine on hand.

More for DH's family than my family, which is why I think we disagree on this topic for our own parties.

Absolutely never. Its frowned upon. If someone showed up wih alcohol they would be the only one and would be getting weird looks. Even someone in their early 20s wouldnt dare...they have friends they do that with. Family and alcohol doesnt mix to me. Most dont drink at all. I personally drink once or twice a year but only date night with my husband.

On my side of the family, yes. On my husband's side, not really. My ILs don't drink, so we usually BYO. My SIL does drink though.

WIth my dh's side it might, might not. With my side, absolutely yes. My side can be a lot of fun but they can also sort of be obnoxious at times.

@Boogs: Same here. My family hardly drinks (well, my dad is another story), but in general we don't need or expect alcohol. My sister might have some beer in her garage if anyone wants one.
DH's family always has beer and liquor in their house and they always offer it. I think it would be weird to them if they didn't have something like beer in the house.

My family? Always. No one goes crazy, but when together we always have a cocktail hour. Then usually beer or wine with dinner, or some sort of "fancy" cocktail when at a restaurant.
DH's family? Nope. His parents rarely drink, so no one really drinks around each other; even at holidays. No one has a problem with it or anything, it's just not the norm. Sooooo opposite my family.

My family is Russian so yes there is always alcohol at every family gathering. No one gets drunk (ever) but pretty much everyone partakes. We almost always have beer, wine, vodka, and cognac available.
