This is so, so long. Sorry!
A few months ago, we took our baby to the ER, because my DH found blood in her diaper. It was a cloth diaper, and since he had changed her in a dimly lit room (middle of the night), he didn't notice it until he had taken the diaper apart. Because of this, we couldn't tell where the blood was coming from. We examined her diaper area with the light on our phone (somehow she was still sleeping), and we didn't see anything. We paged her doctor, and she suggested going to the ER with fear that it was a UTI.
We rush there, get into a room right away. The nurse weighs her and takes her temp. Then, she leaves the room.
We were told they would likely have to a catheter to test for UTI. We had to change her, because she peed through her diaper, and when we opened her diaper, we could see exactly where the blood was coming from. She had a bit of diaper rash that was seeping a bit. It was a teething rash, so it was a little intense, but looked really superficial. Of course, we didn't see it when we were looking with the flashlight.
I went out of the room to get the nurse, and to tell her we'd be going home. I apologized for wasting their time, and she assured me people come in for much less. As we were getting baby redressed, she said we couldn't leave until the doctor came in to make sure everything was ok. I assured her we knew how to handle diaper rash, but she said he was already on his way.
Doctor came in. Looked at the rash. Agreed it didn't look bad at all, and sent us home with a dump print out about diaper rash. I was so embarrassed.
Fast forward to this week. I receive a $500 bill. Our responsibility is $300 and some change. All of the insurance percentages check out, but that's not my issue.
We specifically said we didn't want to see the doctor, and the only diagnostic testing that was done was temp and weight.
Is there a way to fight this? Or even to ask for an itemized bill? All I can see on my EOB and the bill is the total and insurance breakdown. I just cannot fathom that a 10 minute ER visit, with no diagnosis or treatment can be $500.
Any advice would be really appreciated. And, if I'm just plain wrong, please let me know.
*I'm in the U.S. if that matters.
It totally sucks.
