We were hanging out with some friends, and jokingly asked them which of their two kids was their favorite. They recoiled in horror and said you simply can't ask that question!
We told them which kid was our favorite anyway... oops!
I figure that favorites will change over the years anyway... this stuff comes and goes. We will love both kids dearly!
Is it taboo to discuss which of your LOs is your favorite? Also, if you have more than one LO: do you have a favorite?

HAHA. Yeah I think so. Parents aren't supposed to have favorites 
They're supposed to pretend they don't anyway. lol.
I only have 1, so she's my favorite.

I think if you'd worded it "which child is the most fun right now" or something like that they might have had less of a strong reaction... and probably more accurate to what you really meant

We had a conversation about favorites with our friends recently too. My favorite changes throughout the day. The interaction with a toddler versus a newborn is just so different. Our older one is just so much fun at this age, but I love snuggling with our little baby as well.

Yeah, taboo. My godkids' mom has a favorite and a least favorite. Her least favorite has autism and benefits from a GF diet et al, but she can't be bothered to be sure he has the correct food on hand 3/4 of the time. Then she gets mad at him for his autistic tics/habits. I understand that he takes more patience, but it's far more her fault than his. And he KNOWS his mom prefers the other "normal" kids over him.

@mrbee: No, I don't. She's the exception rather than the rule. Most of the time, it's joking, or "my favorite today", or "easier to get along with". She just blatantly prefers her other kids.

Now I wonder if my parents have favorites. My guess would be that I'm the favorite because I'm the only one so far to give them a grandchild.

Haha both me and my husband think our parents have favorites. But. I'm glad it was never said out loud by them. For me it will be a taboo topic because I think even if you just tell friends it can affect how those friends treat your children.

My grandmother made it obvious that she preferred one aunt over the other when they were young and it has created major problems to this day. One is constantly trying to one up the other. It's horrible.

We just have the one so he's the favorite. I think if all parents are honest they sometimes have favorites, e.g. the one that is more fun to play with, the one that doesn't talk back, etc. I think parents avoid saying it out loud so they don't offend their LOs.
@mrbee: So did you respond with Charlie? I'm assuming so because his age is probably a bit more fun than Olive's, right?

@Boogs: We were just joking around... Olive is pretty young (four months) and Charlie was in the other room, so we figure there'd be no real damage if we named our fave of the moment.
That said, both kids are a lot of fun lately! Charlie is definitely cracking us up all the time but Olive gives the most incredible smileys and googley eyes! We will work hard to shower them both with love and not show any favoritism!
