I recently met someone through a colleague and I just blurted out, "You're so pretty!" (she was drop dead gorgeous!) --- I totally felt lame afterwards. But she was nice and just laughed a little and said, "Thank you."

No, I do that all the time! As a woman, I know how hard we are on ourselves so I am not at all hesitant to tell you that you're beautiful or your outfit is amazing, your hairstyle is fabulous, "where'd you get those shoes?!?!", etc!
The way I see it, if you're workin' it, i'll let you know! I don't know anyone who doesn't like compliments!

Meh, not the way you did it. I'd probably get weirded out if it was a very deliberate comment, as if the commenter had thought it over a lot. Sometimes you've just got to blurt out what you see!

I think it's lovely, and it makes that person feel really good. Someone gave me a compliment on the TTC about a week after I had A, when I felt fat and gross and horrible. She made me feel so good with just one comment and I was grateful to her or a long time afterwards : )

No way. I think people might feel a little awkward if they feel uncomfortable receiving compliments but I'm sure they would feel very flattered too!

No, especially not from another woman. I do get a little weirded out when a male stranger says something like that, but if its a woman I'm always flattered.

I totally wanted to do this to a woman I saw on the train yesterday but didn't because I totally thought it was weird.

Ooh, I did this the other day too!she was gorgeous, so a well deserved compliment... And she was up all night with a crying baby, so I think she liked the compliment... At least I hope!
