How do you find a direct flight?? I'm going between two pretty large airports yet they're showing a connection through another major airport!

i search through bing or google travel and limit it to non-stops. then i can see which airlines offer those direct flights. sometimes a nearby airport gives a direct flight instead of another larger one!

On Kayak there's a box you can check for nonstop. But even out of Chicago, I don't get many nonstop flights anymore.

See if there are any airlines with airport hubs between the two airports. That's what usually get a direct flight. Luckily between Philadelphia and Seattle, Alaska Air and US airways both have hubs and so they have direct flights. I have a Frequent flyer credit card with both so I usually get the best deals.
I traveled from Seattle to Indianapolis last night and no direct flights.

I was just dealing with this two days ago and I couldn't find any direct flights!! I ended up looking into a small, local airport and they had direct flights so I booked through them!

Ugh ugh ugh. We just bought tickets last night and there was only one company with a direct flight between our locations. You can google "direct flights from X airport" and try to see the list that way.

You have to click for only non-stop flights. We are lucky in a major hub city so we usually never have to take connecting.

We live in a city that's a Hub for United and so haven't found issue with direct flights going to another big city. But if we want to go see any family not in a larger city then its always connections. Right now we are opting out of connections and just driving the extra hours or using Amtrak for the extra hours. Connecting flights are never fun with a LO!

I guess it just depends on what airlines and what airports. When traveling at Christmas, I really wanted to try Virgin, but they don't fly out of Geneva. So I had to go up to Heathrow. On the day I came back I wanted to seriously kill myself and everyone around me. (I actually had a breakdown in Heathrow.) It went Jacksonville-Atlanta-Newark-Heathrow-Geneva. And I was suffering from morning sickness and generally feeling like crap. NEVER AGAIN!
Good luck!!

We are in the same area, and I always fly Southwest out of SDF. I've never had a connecting flight with them.

Depends if they're even available! Sometimes chartered flights or southwest offer them. I usually google "Airport A nonstop to Airport B" and see if ti picks up on some other website

I'm pretty sure they only exist if you are willing to pay 5x as much. Or at least that's been my luck!

Lol, finding a direct flight unless your destination is a hub is TOUGH!

FYI - I think in the airline industry, a "direct" flight only means that the flight number is the same, and can include the possibility of a stop-over somewhere, but the passenger does not have to change planes. This happened to me once years ago when I booked a "direct" flight, but it was not non-stop. Boo..
As others have suggested, limit your search to "non-stop" flights only! Hope that helps!

I just limit my search to nonstop only and thankfully we are at a Delta hub. just booked nonstop flights to Chicago, NYC, South beach and Boston! (Relatively short flights too so it was an easier search!)

Maybe we are lucky because we live in Atlanta (huge hub) but it is rare for us to ever have connections / stop-overs for flights. Almost everything is direct!
ETA: DH flies weekly for work so we have lots of flight experience too!

Being in the NYC area makes it easier, but I still see some connecting flight situations that have me scratching my head.
@bluestriped bee: yep, I'm originally from Indy and direct flights to/from there are few and far between
