Today I was shopping at a standard chain grocery store. There was a guy (customer) who had set up shop in front of the strawberries and had opened quite a few plastic strawberry containers and was sorting good strawberries into the containers he was going to keep and bad strawberries into the containers I assume he was going to leave behind. Our strawberries have been less than stellar this year and I understand the frustration of paying for a container with a few yucky berries, but I'm not sure that this should be allowed. For one, I don't want a weird guy touching all the strawberries! There were multiple employees who observed it and said nothing. I thought about saying something but then felt like I was overreacting. Anyone ever seen this before?

I think that is sorta weird. I just always eyeball the container without openning it to make sure they look good. Once I saw a guy taking all the husk off the corn before putting it in the produce bag. I thought it was really weird but DH said it was because it makes the corn heavier which raises the price. So i guess that makes sense. But isn't it rude to leave the husks just sitting there for someone else to clean up.

Ew. Gross. I just look at the containers and look for one that has the best looking strawberries. But I wouldn't sort through all of them. I do sort through all of my eggs though. If I find a cracked one, I'll grab another carton. or switch out that one egg. I don't want any cracked eggs!

@MamaJ: I've only seen corn sold individually (like $1/each). Not by pound. I guess this prevents those huskers!

@MamaJ: Our grocery store has a trashcan next to the corn for husks. That way you can make sure the corn isn't bad before you buy

@MamaJ: My grocery store has a trash can next to the corn too, and it's priced by the ear not the pound. I think it's so people can pull it back and see if it is good, but I never know how to tell anyway.

That's really weird and the employees should have said something! Our produce sucks but I just eyeball what I buy. I do open strawberries but I definitely don't sort through them!
@MamaJ: I never thought about the weight of the corn husks! When we lived in Kansas, our grocery store kept a trash can next to the corn just for the husks.i just thought people wanted to make sure they were getting good produce. I've also been to a grocery store that didn't allow husks to be removed.

EWWWW. As a germaphobe, that would skeeve me out sooooo badly.
I also don't think that's really fair. If everyone did that all that would be left would be containers full of nothing but bad berries. I'm surprised that the employees were just letting him do that.

Eeew! Hope you gave him some major stink eye! I have never seen such a thing & I'm surprised none of the employees said anything. Buying strawberries can be a crapshoot, you can eyeball the crap out of them through the clear plastic, but no touching!

Ok, I'm so glad I'm not the only one who finds this odd! I just eyeball them and pick what looks the best as well.
