I think William is a good classic name but I feel like a lot of people are using it right now especially with some of the nicknames like Will and Liam.
Is it too popular for you to use right now for a boy?

Nope! I don't think of it as a popular name at all.

Nope! I mean, it is popular, like Katherine was popular in the 80s. But the popularity of names like that is far outweighed by their timelessness, in my opinion!

I think it is classic and timeless. I actually really like plain old William with no nicknames.

I love it but in my neighborhood it is really popular, especially with the under five set.

No, I love it! I have a nephew named William (and that's what he goes by - no nickname) and he's the only one I know.

@Cole: The reason I asked is because I was looking through Facebook and realize I know 3 babies that are some form of William

I love it, but I have a nephew named William, so I could never use it!

William! It's popular, but it's also timeless.

@T.H.O.U.: I wish they would publish the name data by county or something sometimes! I very rarely hear a lot of super common names here but others seem intensely popular here!

I love William. I don't really like the trendier variations (especially Liam--I feel like I know a toooon of Liams) but I love William on its own: it's also my DH's middle name! I would definitely use it on a son (in a hypothetical world where i was having more children).

I like it and I'd choose it all over again! I only know one other kid William personally. I think it's classy and timeless. And keep in mind that name distribution isn't what it used to be... even the top names on all those name lists are not given to as many kids as in the past (if that makes sense).

I don't think names like William, Adam, John, Matthew, Elizabeth, Anne, Catherine/Katherine can ever really be "popular" in the way that people mean when they talk about Jennifer/Sophia/Aiden-type names. They are too classic and timeless to ever be "popular."

I love the name Will. If I were to use it I would go that route, however my sister's husband is a William and so is his dad, so not an option for us.

@septca: Good point... I don't think people will ever be like "William? Obviously you were born in 1928/1975/2010." Although Liam is more of a giveaway I think! (As is Bill for older peeps.)
watermelon / 14206 posts
Nope. It's M's middle name. Also my dad's first name and older brother's middle name. I think it's timeless.

I do think it is being chosen quite a bit but it is still our top choice if this baby is a boy. Our girl name isn't popular nor is R's but we love William and it has family significance.

a classic! i think Liam is being used a lot more than William around here.

I think William is a classic that has always been popular, but not trendy. I agree I know a lot of Liams though, whether as a nn or full name- I love the name Liam but it is a little too popular among my circle to use, for me.

It's kind of funny-- a lot of the names we were considering were significantly more popular in MA than in the US as a whole. C's name is in the 70's here but in the 130's in the US.

I personally know a looooot of William's so for me the name is a little too popular, BUT I do like the name! No one is called Liam though; mostly just Will.

Well, if you throw an 's' on the end it's our last name, and I'm just not that cruel! Haha. I always feel so bad for kids whose first and last names are practically the same.

I'm biased but I love the name! I think it's classic and distinguished...plus, it passes the resume test.

I always thought of it as a too popular classic name, as in- so many people already have that name (not that there is anything wrong with that but I have multiple negative associations with real life people with that name, so that's what I mean by too popular). I love Margaret for example but if everybody on the block was named that I'd be bound to have some negative associations with that name too. William is just everwhere here. There and everywhere. I don't mind it as a name though, just those darn associations. It is classic like John.

Nope, it's one of my favorite names and such a classic. I know a couple Liam's, but I don't know a single William!
nectarine / 2115 posts
It seems like William itself is less poplar, with names like Liam and Will gaining popularity as full names (as opposed to just nicknames).
