Out of the blue my 6 yr old asked if he could watch Wizard of Oz - he also asked me if it was scary - I told him there were a few scary parts.
Would you let your 6 yr old watch it?

I think 6 is probably old enough... but the witch and the flying monkeys might scare him!

I think I probably watched it at 5...and had nightmares about the WWotW for years to follow! I would say it's okay...if you can strategically omit the scary parts and monitor DS for any sign that he's getting overwhelmed. I would think that the length would preclude him watching it all in one sitting anyway...so maybe that would make it easier to "edit"?

D was 5 when he watched it. He was ok with it. It's long, though.

Wizard of Oz never scared me when I was younger, but the second movie (return to Oz?) gave me nightmares! I was probably 5 or 6 at the time.
I would watch it with him and see how it goes.

I think it would be ok! I remember watching it at a really young age. You could just always fast forward the monkeys if they bother him! Is there a movie version of Wicked? It's such a cool storyline and strikes me as being a little less scary since the witch is good in it. I love all things Wizard of Oz related!!!

my nieces have loved it since they were 4, but they cover their eyes during the witch and monkey.

My son is almost 4, and couldn't get through 15 min of Cars before it was too scary for him. At this rate, he'll probably be 15 before he can watch the Wizard of Oz.

@charmed: haha omg the wheelies! and the headless statue ladies! that movie is horrifying... but i still loved it as a kid.
i don't have kids but i watched wizard of oz VERY young and don't remember having issues with it. i'd let him watch it and see how it goes. you warned him there's a couple of scary parts so just see how he does!

I remember watching the Wizard of Oz when I was really young and I didn't have issues with it. DH didn't like the flying monkeys as a kid though.

Depends on the kid - I liked a lot of stuff around age five that terrified me a few years later because I was just too young to get it! Wizard of Oz never scared me though.

@Mamaof2: it's my most favorite move in the world and I watched it so many times as a kid I wore the VHS tape out! I was pretty scared of the flying monkeys but that's it. We had to fast forward through those parts!

I was obsessed with the Wizard of Oz when I was 2. Like, dressed as Dorothy for Halloween 3 years in a row and asked people to call me by that name all year long, haha
It was actually on TV in the hospital as I was giving birth.
J loves it too! (he's going to be 3)
