Yessss!!! I can't imagine not have A/C in the schools, those poor kids. And I live in Canada!! It's over 90* today with the humidex, that's too hot.

I don't think the public schools are, but Xander's daycare is. But we also live in New England where it's cold more often than not.

I'm in SC...there would be lawsuits if there was no AC in a school.

Yeah, that's a weird Northeast thing, I think. Most schools are not air conditioned. My elementary school wasn't, but my high school was (it was a closed system).

I grew up in nyc and i went to the bronx high school of science. Other than a few computer rooms and the library, none of the rooms were air conditioned. most rooms had fans and the windows opened.

Daycare is air-conditioned. It gets so hot here in the summertime that it would be miserable without it. I know that our parents and ancestors likely grew up without central AC, but now that I have it I can't imagine not having it!

Ugh, it's awful. We don't have LOs in school yet, but DH is a HS teacher in a district where few public schools have AC... in Maryland. We're right on the dividing line where AC begins to get more and more necessary as you go further south, and the first few weeks of school and the last few weeks of school are completely, utterly brutal for both teachers and students. Today was in the mid-upper 90s, with high humidity. Thankfully the students are all off for the summer, but DH had to go into school to pack up his classroom. Those conditions are just bad for your health!

Given his experiences, he's pretty adamant that he doesn't want our LO going to a school without AC. And I see his point. There just isn't any learning going on when everybody is so miserable!

I grew up in San Diego and none of my schools ever had air conditioning. Most houses there don't have AC either though.

Now they do. But they didn't when I was in school.

In the Midwest, and yes all schools have A/C. I remember growing up my cousin's did not and they used to get "heat" days if the temperature got too hot. But that was back in the early 90s, it has been updated.

Nope! Not in the PNW. Most houses don't have it either.

No we don't have AC in our schools (Atlantic Canada). It's usually not an issue since it only gets HOT in July/August. There might be a few warm days in June but fans can usually do the trick

In the HS where I work we have a/c but it doesn't regulate well. It was so cold while I was proctoring exams on Friday that my teeth were chattering!!

ETA: I don't think the high school where I grew up (a few towns over) had a/c.

Some of the classrooms in the school I work in have A/C, some don't. It has been miserable on hot days these past few weeks. Some schools in our district in Maryland have A/C, some don't, just like @ms.pumpkin said. It is cruel and ridiculous to expect kids in schools without A/C to perform as well as kids in schools with A/C.

@MrsTiz: the humidity does make it so much worse! Fortunately it's dropping right now here, it was 90% last night (it was gross, I live in the top floor of a building and it was 90 in my apt when I got home at 9:30 last night, I caved & turned on the AC! In the winter the heat rising is a big help, it sucks in the summer!), now it's 87%, that's still really humid though, it's supposed to be ~85 outside today.

Every school around here def has a/c!

Another southern bee here. Gotta have it here. It gets blistering hot in the summer.

The a/c at work went out the other day. It was a balmy 84 degrees with 53% humidity. At 8am. Holy smokes was it gross and hard to breathe. Many of us went home and worked from home instead. It got up to the mid 90's that day so yea....
