I would love to get one, but there are too many cords on the ground and too much general funkiness in the apartment layout. Bee's mom has one though, and it works great with their place!
Is your home layout suited to a Roomba?

No just because we have so much furniture! It would be crashing into chair/table/couch legs so much we'd probably break it.

Not really, but we still use it (we got a hand me down one from my husband's parents). It actually doesn't eat cords! It does fill up really fast, though. We have two dogs, so we have to empty it constantly.

Our master bedroom + sitting room is, so it lives there! But DH wrapped the legs of the bed in bubble wrap because we were afraid the edges would get damaged.

I have read that it is possible to section off your house to make it work better for you (put up a gate etc.) and I think it would do fine in our house if we did that. It might do ok without the extra help but it's hard to tell without shelling out the money for it.

I don't know much about them - do they work for both soft & hard surfaces (carpet and laminate?)

@Cole: We have a lot of french doors in our house and I close them to keep the Roomba from wandering, which helps.
@theknest: You can use it on a flatter rug but I don't think I'd rely heavily on it for plush carpet.

Yes, because it's basically a ranch style house. But my son is scared of it, so we put it away for now.

@mrs. tictactoe: Ugh yeah that's my only gripe! I have a shedding dog and I have to empty it out for every floor!
Other than that I love it! I don't have too too much going on in the house, but I do have to prep the areas a bit before I start the roomba. It's still 100% better than needing to bust out the dyson every other day!
