By looking at my maiden name, you'd think it was super easy (Angell... pronounced Angel) but people always said Ang-elle or Angle... And my married name is confusing as hell. It's a common name where we live but when we go anywhere, nobody knows how to say or spell it.

No, it is an 11 letter German name that is pronounced nothing like it looks. out of 11 letters only three are vowels!
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
Yes, very common. My maiden name I always had to pronounce and spell for people.
bananas / 9229 posts
My maiden wasn't. It was a smidge more common in the midwest but it was pronounced differently there. People always said it wrong, would ask the origin of it, etc. I joked I would marry someone with an easy last name and totally lucked out! My current last name is one of the top 10 most common ones in the US, all of which are easy to pronounce: (in order) Smith, Johnson, Williams, Brown, Jones, Miller, Davis, Garcia, Rodriguez, Wilson.

Maiden: no, people who said it right personally know people with the last name
Married: yes, but I must jumble it all the time because when repeated back 50% of the time I get the same (wrong) name

@cascademom: I also have a polish last name.
My last name is a Polish translation of an everyday word. It's only 4 letters and you pronounce every letter but every body wants to make one of the first two letters silent. No. Or they want to ad an extra letter and make it a common Indian name. My maiden was super easy and common.

Mine shouldn't be because it is phonetic but I guess because it is long and has several letters from the end of the alphabet people struggle with it.

My maiden name was super easy to pronounce and easy to spell and I got a lot of grief because I "fit" my last name. My married name is very difficult to prounounce, it's polish.

People mess mine up all the time. So weird that a lot of people add a "t" in the middle. My maiden name was simple (to me) yet people always put an emphasis on it so apparently it wasn't simple either.

It's very easy. My maiden name wasn't as easy.... so it's a nice change.
cantaloupe / 6687 posts
Maiden name - so easy...three letters and one syllable
Married name - so easy and so common
grapefruit / 4819 posts
I had a very easy to pronounce, super common Spanish last name before I was married and it is hardly ever mispronounced.
And my married name is even easier now - a common man's name with the -son suffix. Never have to spell it, never have to correct the pronunciation.

Meh. My married name has the spelling of a very common word but it isn't pronounced the way that word is. So for friends or people I'll be working with a while, I'll correct them. If it's just in passing with someone I won't see again, I'll let it go. My maiden name was like one of the top 15 last names ever, so it was easy to pronounce and spell.

@BabyBoecksMom: Woohoo I was pronouncing it right in my head
@TurtleDoves: I thought the last part of your maiden name was pronounced ree! Interesting!
Both my maiden and married names are veryyyy easy!
pomelo / 5321 posts
Mine is really easy. It's pronounced just like it's spelled but people still have a really hard time with it. My maiden name is super easy too. I rarely had people mispronounce it.

My maiden name SHOULD have been super easy to pronounce. 5 letters, said exactly as it was spelled. But it was never pronounced right.
My married name is super simple, so I never have problems.

My maiden name was super easy but people still got it wrong. It was Barnhill but people ALWAYS said Barnhart. I was so mad through school because there was a girl w/Barnhart for her last name and she was a total b-word and we had similar features so people thought we were related. Now my married name is Crofoot (pronounced crow-foot) so people either think I said Crawford or tell me I misspelled my name if they see it written out. Totally annoying haha.
See why I didn't hyphenate my last name?

99% of the time people get it wrong. I think if some letters were swapped out it would be more intuitive.
pear / 1812 posts
It should be but somehow people just don't get it. Shef. Pronounced like it is spelled, just like Chef. But I get Self, Shelf, Sheef, Jeff... Ugh... I will never get it.
My maiden name I could see people pronouncing it wrong. It can be weird. But some of the mispronunciations were strange. Fricke: Frik-E. I expected Frick. Not Frike, Friker, Frickle, Flicker, Freak, Freaky.... oh well. My sisters get to enjoy that problem now!

Mine is super easy...And everyone not only has an easy time saying it, they also always say it like the slang word..."Holler!!!!" Said like "Holla!!!" I think it's funny:)
Plus my first name starts with a J and my nickname is JHo, which I find pretty amusing and actually love:). I was pumped to get my husband's last name!

Very easy. It is a man's first name, and not totally uncommon, but not super common either. DH's last name is spanish, but short and easy to pronounce.
pomelo / 5132 posts
My maiden name was an easy to pronounce but not easy to spell German name. Now my last name is French/Swiss, and no one can pronounce it/spell it, even when I tell them it sounds like Chevrolet. All my students can say it, but none of the adults on my school can!
pomelo / 5073 posts
Maiden name---no way!!!! Married name---mostly. I never thought I'd still have to spell it out, but most of the time I still do!!!

Mine is! My maiden name was awful -- part of why I decided to take Mr. D's name was so that people would stop mangling mine.
pomegranate / 3521 posts
@BabyBoecksMom: I always said "Bo-eck" in my head!
My maiden name - while short, it was always pronounced wrong. I love my married name because it is easy to pronounce but different.

My maiden name was easy peasey. My married seems straight forward to me but I've heard three different pronunciations. Oddly enough the men and women in the family pronounce it differently. Go figure!
grapefruit / 4442 posts
People butcher it all the time. It's phonetic but I guess all the letters throw them off
pomegranate / 3643 posts
My last name is Simmons but spelled with E's instead of an I and an O. So guess how people pronounce it.
nectarine / 2750 posts
No way! Mine is Italian and nobody gets it right. That is why the baby will have my husband's name.
pomelo / 5257 posts
Both mine and DH's are easy to pronounce. I'm very happy about that because I hyphenated and both are kind of long (three syllables each). If they had been hard to pronounce too, it would have been too much! Haha
GOLD / papaya / 10166 posts
@Reese: I pronounced it the same way until DH finally correctedvme when we started dating.
grapefruit / 4862 posts
This is so interesting! Both of mine are simple but often messed up. My maiden was a man's name but was often misspelled/pluralized (ex: Steven /Stephen/Stephens) and my married name is only 4 letters and VERY simply pronounced, but everyone tries to make it sound more ethnic than it is. I have to always say a simple "Hat, like Cat" phrase every time I give my name. But I like it more because 4 letters is easier!
