So I went in for an ultrasound today and my baby stopped growing and is the same size as my last one at 6 weeks. I would be 10 weeks tomorrow. I have the option to wait to start bleeding and bleed everything out or have a D& C. My first miscarriage happened naturally. I don't know whether to wait this out or do the D&C. For those who have had a D&C, was it painful?

I've only had natural miscarriage, never had a D&C, but I just wanted to say that I've been where you are and I am so sorry that you have to walk through this.

I had a blighted ovum - years ago. The doctor advised me to do a d&c rather than wait to naturally miscarry. I was very young and didnt do research and just went ahead with the d&c. I dont mean to scare you away from it but it was not a fun experience for me. I cried. I dont remember it being painful but just uncomfertable. Pretty much felt like a vacuum.
However, I survived it and here I am 5 years later pregnant at 22 weeks (it didnt take me that long to conceive - we just waited that long to start trying again.)I would just do a little research before deciding on what to do.

i had a d&c last year, and it was totally painless for me. i may have had some cramping afterwards, but don't remember. the whole hospital procedure was fine too. easy and it was over with quickly. i'd prefer d&c over naturally doing it, but that's just me.

A D&C is slightly more likely to cause complications, since it was roughly 6 weeks. My personal choice would be natural miscarriage. However, I would go with whatever feels more right to you.

The one thing that surprised me about the D&C is that they were able to easily do genetic testing during the autopsy, and tell us that the miscarriage was caused by a Trisomy 22. That gave a tremendous amount of closure to both of us. It was surprising (to me) how much that closure helped in the healing process.

I am also so sorry for your loss... I can't even imagine the pain. I hope Mrs. Bee's experiences help you decide what to do... all I know about a D&C is that you have to be put under general anesthesia so that can be a big deal. Then again, going through it naturally would probably be just as traumatizing.

oh i'm so so sorry.
the first time i miscarried it was around 6 weeks, and i opted to take the pill that induces miscarriage because i wanted to avoid surgery, and i didn't want to miscarry on my own. it was pretty horrible -- similar to mrs. hide and seek's recent post about her first miscarriage. lots of cramping and i passed everything and had to discard it. really tough emotionally.
the second time i was 8 weeks along, and i got a d&c. you do go under general anesthesia, but it was generally painless and i was ok physically the following day.
it really is a personal decision. miscarrying naturally could take weeks, but you would avoid surgery. best of luck with what you decide.

Thanks everyone. If nothing happens this weekend, I may do the D&C early next week. I have to travel to Indiana (from California) next Thurs- Sunday for a family wedding! My husband's sister is getting married. If it was just any other wedding, I would opt out of it but I can't.. and I don't want to be bleeding through it or worse yet on the plane! My first miscarriage happened naturally and it was a painful process for a few days with all the cramping.

I had 2 D&C's because the first didn't get everything. My doctor said that's very rare, but you still might want to ask your doctor if they do an ultrasound during to make sure they got it all. Otherwise your body keeps trying to bleed out the baby and dealing with that and the emotional issues of miscarrying is no fun.
Other than that the D&Cs weren't a big deal at all. I barely had any cramping or bleeding after the second one. It's harder emotionally than physically.

I have had a natural miscarriage and a d&c. The d&c was not painful for me at all. It was a short and simple procedure and I had minimal spotting for one day after. I had a much more difficult time dealing with the natural mc from a mental standpoint, where the d&c gave me more finality.

@artbee - Thanks. It's reassuring to know that it's not that horrible. One of my friends also had one a couple of years ago and I was just asking her about it. She said the first two days were painful and then it was fine.

My husband and I were in a similar situation. We MC'd right before 10 weeks when a US showed that our baby hadn't grown since 6 weeks. We were given a pill option, where we inserted 4 pills vaginally and MC'd at home. It was pretty painful, but they can prescribe painpills ahead of time.

@mssally: I think it's different for everyone. I also found out at my 12 week apt. that the baby had stopped growing at 6 weeks. They gave me the option to take pills to pass the baby, and I tried two different kinds of pills and it didn't work. So I had to do the D&C. I really didn't want to do that, but in the end it really wasn't bad at all. I honestly didn't have that much pain like your friend did. Hopefully you won't either! Then like I said.... I had to have another D&C. I like to think my baby didn't want to leave me

I'm so sorry. That sucks.
I had a D&C with our loss (actually, I think it was technically a D&E since we were a little past the first trimester). The hospital staff was super nice, I went in at like 7 AM and I think I was home by 2 PM. Some cramping and bleeding, but physically it wasn't bad at all, and I liked at least knowing that it was OVER. It was hard enough emotionally, and I think I would have had a harder time waiting it out at home.

I'm so sorry for your loss! I have only had a natural mc, but my friend and a D&C and while obviously not a great experience, she said it wasn't that bad. She also said she had more of a final feeling that a PP had talked about.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I had a natural miscarriage, then d&c last year because the natural miscarriage lasted for over a month. (Rare!) The d&c wasn't bad at all. As others said, it was harder emotionally. Physically, it wasn't a big deal. I'm sure no matter what decision you make will be the best one for you. I'm so sorry. ((Hugs))
