@SweetiePie: Is there an IVF nurse/line you can call tonight? Tomorrow morning is probably still fine because a lot of places count the next day as CD1 if you get AF at night or in the evening. If you don't get to talk to them, I would just count on going in tomorrow morning and taking some of each type of injectible with you. My first appt of an IVF or injectible cycle has always been on CD2 so I'm sure you'll be fine! Good luck!

@SweetiePie: no advice, but good luck. I'm so excited that you're starting soon!

@spaniellove: thanks so much for responding! I wasn't given any special kind of line. I called the usual number this afternoon and the only option was to page an on call doctor. That just seemed a little drastic to me.
I'm sure tomorrow morning will be fine. I'll still be within 24 hours of starting my period, so that's still day 1, right? That's how I'm calming myself down at least
Now that I think about it even more, the only hours they gave me for when my period starts is 7am-8:30am every day. So that must be when they want you to come in, regardless.
I just can't believe it's all happening!!! I'm so excited and scared right now. To think that I might start injecting myself as soon as tomorrow is so WEIRD!

@SweetiePie: I wish I had some advice for you! I was on birth control the month before IVF. I stopped my pills the day I started Lupron and got my period a couple days later. I'm sure you are ok to wait until the morning though! A nurse taught me how to inject myself. It's very easy to learn. I'm excited for you!

@SweetiePie: Good luck tomorrow! I don't have much advice because I was on BCP for a month leading up to the IVF cycle and started Lupron injections while I was still on the birth control. I'm sure going in tomorrow will be fine though. So excited for you! Are you doing monitoring tomorrow (bloodwork & ultrasound) or have you already had your antral follicle scan? Keep us updated, we're all pulling for you!!!

@SweetiePie: Tomorrow morning does sound like the right time frame. Don't forget to take something to write down the instructions and dosages - it's so easy to forget the numbers It's super exciting, this is it!!
honeydew / 7463 posts
@Leialou: @twodoghouse: @spaniellove: @MrsKoala: Thanks so much for the support. I'm trying to temper my excitement because I keep thinking as if in 6-8 weeks I WILL be pregnant, possibly with twins, but obviously neither of those things are a done deal. Especially since I'm going to have a looooot of bad eggs. Its just so hard to not get excited!
@twodoghouse: You know, I'm not really sure what's supposed to happen tomorrow. I know that they said they'd tell me how much of each med and when, so I guess they have to do some kind of test to determine that, if they don't know already? I've been assuming bloodwork and an ultrasound.
@spaniellove: I know, I'm so afraid of messing something up! Fortunately, they gave me a sheet that names all of the drugs I'm on, and on the back is a chart/schedule by cycle day and they're going to write in exact dosage and times for at least the first few days.
Question, since you said to take in one of each injectable tomorrow - what should I do about the Gonal F Pen? It needs to stay refrigerated, right? Do I just put it in a thermal bag with ice? What if I have to take it to work with me after? I'm so afraid of ruining a dose!
honeydew / 7916 posts
@SweetiePie: I haven't used Gonal-F, but IIRC they don't do anything with your actual meds besides hold them when they teach you? They might have a Gonal-F pen there to use for demontrations; don't risk ruining your precious meds!
apricot / 452 posts
@SweetiePie: when I went in for my injection lesson they had examples of all of the drugs that I was on so I didn't need to bring mine. To be on the safe side, you can bring one of each but I would probably leave the gonal f pen at home in the fridge. Good luck this cycle!!
honeydew / 7463 posts
@Shutterbug: thanks How are you doing?
@spaniellove: @justdarling: Ok that's smart. I'll leave it at home. I already have a bag with everything else ready to go! Early morning!
I have a zillion more questions, but I guess that's what the RE and nurses are for I'll give you ladies a break!
Night everyone! Off to dream of BFPs and Sticky Babies for all of us!

@SweetiePie: I am so excited for you! How was your visit this morning? Tons and tons of luck!!!!

@kentuckygirl: thanks! I started Lupron on Friday and will start estrogen patches this Friday. That's all the meds I'm on besides a Valium the day of transfer.

@SweetiePie: how was your appointment this morning?

Pumped to see this board hopping again! Hopefully, it revivies with its old magic
@SweetiePie: how'd it go this morning?
eggplant / 11408 posts
@Leialou: that's a lot less than a fresh transfer, right? And good call on the Valium.
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21628 posts
@LovelyPlum: oh yeah! For the fresh cycle I was on Lupron, Bravelle, Menopur, estrogen patches and an antibiotic before transfer. Then I had my trigger shot. After transfer I took endometrin, estrogen pills, baby aspirin, and a steroid I think. Frozen cycles are much easier.
honeydew / 7463 posts
@kentuckygirl: Thanks! It went well. It was kind of rushed because they had a lot of walk-ins to get through before the scheduled appointments. This was the first time that it felt kind of impersonal, but I guess they had to.
The walk-in for bloodwork and monitoring and such is 7am-8:30am. I got there at 7:03 and there were already 10 women ahead of me! They must line up outside of the office, like waiting for the new iPhone or concert tickets (back in the day, haha). I'm fine with waiting a bit, so there's no way I'm showing up before 7am.
I start the injections tomorrow - Gonal F Pen and Menopur, both in the PM. I'm a little disappointed, they didn't say a word to me about how to do it or any other details of administering these. I have a lot of questions, so I'm going to call the nurse line for Freedom Pharmacy today.

@Leialou: @LovelyPlum: @spaniellove: Thanks ladies I just saw your responses after my last post.
@Leialou: That's a lot of drugs! Rookie question - what is a "fresh cycle"?
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21628 posts
@SweetiePie: a fresh cycle is when they transfer embryos that haven't been previously frozen. So you go through the egg retrieval and then have a transfer 3-5 days later.

@SweetiePie: That's a surprise that they told you to bring your meds and didn't do a demonstration for you. Have you watched any videos online, like these?
http://www.villagefertilitypharmacy.com/medications-and-video-injection-lessons
Good luck with your injections and I'm sure there are plenty of us here who can answer your questions too! I found it easier to use the Q-cap on the Menopur but I remember @Sweettooth found it easier not to, so whatever works for you!
honeydew / 7463 posts
@Leialou: Ahhh ok. So that's something I'll never be doing. Haha. Good to know!
@spaniellove: Well, they didn't tell me to bring the meds. I just did because I wasn't sure what would happen today! I think they thought I was weird to bring them, haha. I could have been more aggressive about showing me what to do, but they had a waiting room full of ladies who were anxious to get in, so I just let it go. I know that I'll be able to find stuff online (thank you!) and call the Freedom nurse's line, so I decided not to worry too much.
Easier said than done! Its all I can think about today at work. And I'm so busy here. Bad timing!

@Apex: @Shutterbug: Thanks All of you ladies sure make a nervous IVF newbie feel like she isn't alone.
And, while I definitely have questions about the actual mechanics of administering the shots, I also have questions like...if I'm supposed to take both the Gonal-F and the Menopur in the evening, do I take them at the same time? Or do I have to space them out?
And, my dosage says 2 vials of menopur...so do I do 2 separate shots of menopur in one sitting? Or do I mix both into the same syringe and do ONE shot?
These are the two that make me the most nervous!
clementine / 770 posts
@SweetiePie: I mixed all 4 of my meds (2 of each) in the same vial and injected in the evening, and i injected the Lupron in the morning. But i know some ladies did not mix the Gonal F with the Menopur like i did
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21628 posts
@SweetiePie: I would assume that you mix them and give your self one shot. I mixed 2 bravelle a and 1 menopur for one shot. That's definitely something you need to know! Do you have an IVF nurse coordinator at your clinic that you can call?
honeydew / 7463 posts
@Apex: @Leialou: So, the menopur is 2 vials but the Gonal F is the 'pen'. So I guess I won't be mixing those together, but I still need to know if I can inject each at the same time (well, not simultaneously, haha. But within minutes of eachother).
I was going to call the Freedom nurses hotline today, but I am just slammed at work and I ended up getting home at 9:02. Sure enough, the nurse's line closes at 9pm Rats. I'll call first thing tomorrow AM though.
I'm also seriously considering calling this in-home injection nurse place. If they would do a single visit just to teach me what to do, that would be worth the money! I just don't know if they make you commit to X number of visits. I feel so lost!
ETA: I need to cool my jets. Women do this every day, its not like I'm the first. I think I need to take a few deep breaths and maybe get a 10 minute chair massage tomorrow right before I inject myself
honeydew / 7230 posts
@SweetiePie: Bummer that the nurses didn't go over how to inject, but the online videos helped us a lot! I remember feeling really rushed in our first few appointments too, like I was cattle being herded! As you get closer to retrieval they will probably spend more time with you and give you more personalized instructions.
I used the Follistim pen, not Gonal F, but I did that and Menopur both at night only a few minutes apart. Just pick a new injection spot and alcohol swab in between! The pen meds are super easy, I'm sure you won't have any problems with that. Read some instructions/watch some videos on the Menopur, though. I think you have to inject that one slowly and maybe hold it in there for a couple seconds? So you'll want to make sure you know ahead of time how many seconds to wait and everything.
I also had to do 2 vials of Menopur. This is what the nurse instructed us to do: suck up the amount of liquid you need (sterile water or whatever it was - I'm recalling this from memory!) and inject into the Menopur powder. Swirl gently till the powder dissolved. Suck up all of the Menopur + liquid mixture from the first vial and inject into the next vial of Menopur powder. Swirl till dissolved. At that point I'm pretty sure we switched needle tips, then we sucked up all the liquid and injected. This one burns a little bit so I liked to ice ahead of time!
Good luck with the meds! It's nervewracking at first, but by the end you'll be a total pro! Fingers crossed for you!
honeydew / 7916 posts
@SweetiePie: Don't beat yourself up about not being able to call Freedom, the protocol is up to your doctors whether you separate the doses or do them together so they probably couldn't answer you for sure. But I think it's pretty common to do stims together so they might have mentioned it if they wanted anything different. Could you call your clinic and ask if you could come in for a quick lesson? Even though they get slammed in the mornings I'm sure there must be a nurse who has a few minutes for you.
One thing that helps me with drawing up liquid from a vial (like the saline for Menopur) is to pull the plunger back before sticking it into the vial - whatever amount of liquid you're going to use. Otherwise the suction just isn't right!
It is a lot when it's still abstract and you can't really grasp it but after a couple doses you'll be an expert, I promise!
honeydew / 7463 posts
@twodoghouse: @spaniellove: thank you both! I got a hold of a nurse at my RE office and she answered my questions. Now it's just the anxiety of waiting! I just want to do it now and be done with it. I'm sure the anticipation is the worst part. Once I know what to expect, it'll be cake.
I dreamt about injecting myself allll night. I had a really restless night of sleep. I'm starting to wonder if I have an overarching anxiety issue to take care of
honeydew / 7463 posts
@twodoghouse: The description you gave about the Menopur...that's exactly what the nurse said to do. Mix the liquid into one of the powder vials, then take that mixture and put it into another powder vial. Then inject that.
So glad I called! I never would have thought to do that.

@SweetiePie: That's great to hear! In the end they want you to be successful. You will do great and after running through it the first time and seeing all the moving parts I bet you'll feel better! Good luck tonight!
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21628 posts
@SweetiePie: you're going to do great! I was so anxious about the first injection that I stood there with the needle in my hand for several minutes working up the nerve. Once you get past the first one it really is a piece of cake.
eggplant / 11408 posts
@SweetiePie: how were your injections? I'm sure you were a rockstar!
pomelo / 5000 posts
@Leialou: I stalled for so long. I dragged my laptop to the bathroom and watched videos of people giving themselves shots. Then I thought, "Wait, I need music to give myself shots to," and searched for the perfect song. I was hoping Bob Marley would help me feel calm. I got tired of myself just standing there with medicine in my hand and finally jabbed it on in. It's kind of surreal the first time, but past the initial prick, it's not that bad! I found that the temp of the meds affected how much it stung, so I tried to let it stand for about 10 minutes (mine were in the fridge).
@sweetie pie: very excited to see good updates from you!
