    @ShayNanigans: congratulations! So exciting.

It's very encouraging to see and read about those of you who've had successful experiences with IVF as someone who will be starting this journey in about 18 months. It's so great to see each and every BFP!

@PointeShoesTutus: how come you'll be waiting so long to do IVF? I thought waiting an extra month was going to do me in! I can't imagine waiting over a year!

  8. PointeShoesTutus

    clementine / 797 posts

@thisisme: Believe me, the wait is killing me. We have to wait that long because we are relocating and my husband will be going back to school. Once he finishes his accelerated program and gets a job, we will be able to start IVF. Because of all my health issues, I will likely not be able to work and go through the stemming/collection/transfer process. My doctors anticipate a rough, high risk pregnancy. So until I'm able to stay home, IVF is on hold. I want those 18 months to fly by

Sorry, I'm horrible at catching up on this thread, but congrats to @thisisme: and @ShayNanigans: !!!!!

    Yay!!

Question for you all. I'm still on the fence about paying for each IVF one by one or seeing if my dr will approve one of those multi-cycle plans. Part of me thinks my first IVF won't work and I'll have to pay more for my 2nd cycle. If we do 3 cycles, I'll have to revisit my finances.

So at this moment, I very slightly leaning towards a multi-cycle. But all of these IVF BFPs makes me hopeful that I might actually get pregnant my first try. Ahh, what to do, what to do.

@bluestriped bee: Do you get a refund if you don't use the remaining cycles?

@bluestriped bee: are you unexplained? I wish they kept a track of all the successes and failures so we could figure out what gives us the best or worst chances, u know? Like higher rate of success for unexplained than typical? Maybe we could run a poll for all those who had ivf. What the diagnosis was with those who succeeded and didn't succeed. Mine was unexplained and it was successful. Are u scared of having twins? Or... Would u want to do ivf more than once for future babies? I think u need to weigh in everything to see if it's worth it to pay the extra to get more chances. Why do u think u will fail? Cuz u didn't get pregnant with other procedures? I was so scared it wouldn't work either because iui, clomid didn't work. But that's also why we transferred two. We weren't afraid of twins. And we figured if it didn't work the first time, we would probably go the adoption route.

So I think the big question is do u think u will have a lot of quality eggs. Cuz if u get a good number and they freeze, then doing an fet is cheaper than doing another full ivf.

Sorry so long. Lots to think about. I'd talk to your doctor to see what he thinks your chances are... Good luck!

@PointeShoesTutus: that's so tough! It seems really unfair sometime how inaccessible IVF is. Do you have any semi long term projects for the next year and a half to help the time pass?

@bluestriped bee: I agree with everything @tequiero21 said. Our diagnosis was entirely male factor (congenital absence of vas deferens) and I've hoped through this process that our chance of success were higher than usual because I'm young (28) and I don't have any known fertility issues. That's a tough decision you have to make either way!

My update: Finally got the call from my doctor this evening that my beta was positive! My hcg was 191. I have no idea if that's high, low, or normal, but I'm definitely pregnant! More bloodwork mon and thurs next week!

@thisisme: woo hoo! What dpt are u? At like 12 dp3t, I was 300... With twins!

@bluestriped bee: Aww man, I typed out this long reply and it disappeared!

But I was saying...I think doing 3 fresh cycles tends to be pretty rare without a known issue like DOR or something that causes RPL. If you've had a decent response in previous cycles you'll probably have embryos to freeze! It's also important to make sure you're working with the best clinic for your situation so they will choose the most effective protocol for you and will respond quickly to each day's numbers by making adjustments to your meds/schedule if necessary.

Even as someone who had a failed IVF and planned to do a 2nd fresh cycle, I never look back and wish I'd paid for more than one at a time.

@tequiero21: I'm 10dp5dt today. We only put in one embryo so I'm hoping it's just a singleton! Maybe we'll try for twins next time!

@thisisme: yay for a positive beta! I do have some projects/things to keep me occupied for the next 18 months but I'm still chomping at the bit. One positive is that we are moving to a state with infertility testing and procedures (including IVF) mandates for insurance companies. So there's a good chance our out of pocket costs may be much less expensive. Too bad it doesn't include PGD. That's the whole reason we are going to do IVF. But I can't complain since it can be so very expensive if you pay completely out of pocket.

@PointeShoesTutus: Sending hugs your way - it seems like such a long wait but I can understand being cautious when you have a difficult health situation. I have chronic health issues and had to stop working outside the home in order to devote more time and energy to taking care of myself so I wasn't in the ER all the time. If you ever want to talk about it I'm here! And in the meantime, these 18 months are perfect for a long-term project!

@spaniellove: @thisisme: @tequiero21: Thank you! That does make sense! Great advice guys!

@tequiero21: yeah, I am unexplained. No, I'm not scared of twins. I actually would love to have twins. Triplets would worry me a little but I'll take anything.

I think I'll go with one cycle at a time since FET should be cheaper than whole IVF cycle. Thanks again!!

@spaniellove: bummer about your post being eaten. I've had that happen a few times.

@bluestriped bee: Just to give another perspective-- I am so thankful that I chose one of the multi-cycle plans. (Ours is up to six fresh IVF cycles and any associated FET for a flat fee [meds are purchased separately] and if you don't have a take-home baby at the end, the flat fee is returned.) Since we're paying all out of pocket, it has given me such great peace of mind to know that the cost is fixed, and it's really reduced my stress levels.

I am currently pretty sure I'm miscarrying from my IVF BFP, and there is a great bit of comfort in knowing that I can roll into another fresh cycle once my body is ready.

At my clinic, the cost of this program is only about twice the cost of a single fresh transfer, so it was an easy decision for us as the only financial risk was if it worked the first time. I was willing to assume that risk to buy the peace of mind. If it was dramatically more expensive, that would've made it more difficult to decide.

@PointeShoesTutus: That's great that the bulk of IVF will be covered! We had to pay everything out of pocket. IVF + PGD and it was I'd say about $25k. But the PGD was roughly $3,500. So $3,500 vs $25k isn't a bad deal
I'm really excited for you to start the process! I know it seems far but it'll be well worth the wait!

@momazon: Thanks for your advice. Glad to see your point of view. I think that's what I was thinking when I was leaning towards that multi-cycle plan. Although, I don't think the multi-cycle plan offered at my clinic will give me a refund.

I'm so sorry about your m/c. Sending hugs!
