I would combine bc so close together is a lot to ask of your guests.

I feel like that's a lot to do in one day for a baby. Lo didn't even make it through the whole birthday party and we just had brunch, gift opening, and cake. After that the guests stayed to mingle and she napped. I couldn't imagine also having her sit still and behave long enough for the naming ceremony.

I agree that combining it makes sense...but would you parents let you just take over adding in the naming ceremony to the party that yo'ure already planning? Especially if the naming ceremony will be so short.

I think combining is ideal, but if all guests are in the same town I think 2 events would be fine. If you do go for 2 events, I would say 'no gifts' to one of them.

@DillonLion: Do you want to have a naming ceremony? You could just tell your parents you are going to host both events and just send them an invite. I would thank them for the offer, but explain it makes more sense to combine both celebrations. Would excluding them from planning cause more drama to the point they would be a no-show?

I would double it up. The thing is, it's not like you have anything going on at a first birthday other than eating cake... I would have the baby naming first and then do cake.
Other than organizing the rabbi to do the ceremony, you could plan everything else for the party. Baby naming/birthdays have the same stuff (food and drinks for the guests) so I don't know why you wouldn't be able to plan it yourself and tell your parents you'll devote the first hour to the baby naming and let them plan whatever they want for it.
