Post inspiration pictures please!
This is not our bathroom, I just pulled the image online....but we do have these awful light fixtures in both of our bathrooms. We won't be replacing them any time soon, but I like to gather inspiration way before I do anything.
So.....what kind of bathroom fixture would you choose to update these strip lights in a bathroom? Vanity and countertop are white, and other accents in the bathroom are chrome, if that matters.

@avivoca: no room! Our vanity goes to the wall where the door is (if that makes sense)

I think those come off in one piece and are really easy to update with a new fixture, like the one mamaof2 posted.

@looch: Yeah I'm pretty sure my husband can do it pretty easily, but he thinks they are fine as is, so it's going to take some finessing. =)

@Anagram: Could you do a chandelier in your ceiling? We also have a sconce over our mirror, I hate it and it makes us look tired because the light is projected down.

@avivoca: hmm..maybe? I'd have to check and see where our current overhead light is, but we have 3 overhead lights in the bathroom (one over the shower, one sort of off-center, and the bathroom fan light....so if it's not sort of centered in the room, I think it might look odd.
Also, I love girly stuff like chandeliers in bathrooms, but my husband definitely would not like it, and he's surprisingly opinionated about home décor. And so am I. Which makes for a lot of stalemates in our house.

Could you make the mirror smaller? I feel like a lot of older bathrooms had those big sheets of mirror, or a medicine closet or whatever - could you update with something like this? (Not my bathroom - although, unfortunately, my downstairs one looks a lot like the before.

it's easier than you're likely anticipating to replace them!
They key is to determine where the "box" is that the electrical is coming through, that will help you identify what type of replacement you can buy.
Turn off the power at the breaker box
take off the hollywood light (there are likely just a few screws somewhere on it.. they may be sort of hidden but they're there and all you need is a screwdriver)
the wires will still be connected, which is fine, you just want to see WHERE along the long stretch of lights the wires are.
If the wires are in the middle/centered over your sink, you can buy ANY kind of light fixture you want. Go crazy.
If it's in some weird spot off center or way to the side (not that uncommon, they put it where it's easiest based on where the studs are) then you can buy one like mamaof2 posted above that has the long plate behind it to cover but NOT one like the chrome one you posted unless you move the wire box.
Moving the wire box isn't necessarily difficult, it just means cutting adn patching the drywall which is not super fun. I've done it before for off center lights, takes a lot of time but i'm really picky with light fixtures!

we just put in double sinks and took out the mirror and the existing lights. we got two matching mirrors that were smaller to center above each sink and had 3 sconces added. one on each side and one in the middle. i love the way it looks! i have some pretty bad photos and also my microsoft paint mock up! haha.
ETA: the mirrors are actually hung now.

I actually kind of like those Hollywood lights, heh. Not that we have any. Not a fan of the wall-sized shapeless mirrors though, which we do have.

We just went to Lowes and bought whatever set they had for around $100. We were able to get matching sets for all 3 bathrooms, but with different number of lights. They can be mounted face up or face down.

@Anagram: I just switched to something very similar. The metal on mine is brushed instead of shiny. Our sink faucet is shiny, so eventually I'll have to switch out that too. I had the hardest time finding small energy-efficient bulbs in bright and ended up having to settle for soft-white.

Just taken em off and you will probably find there is only one place the wires come out and so you can pretty much choose anything to replace it.

@Anagram: My husband also thinks these lights are fine and it drives me bonkers! If you figure out how to convince yours, let me know what worked!
