I'm curious to know if anyone has looked into, or adopted from Kazakhstan. There's a few conflicting information online about the amount of travel required.
From my understanding, the selection process is all done in person. I'd love to know more about it.

No personal experience, though one of my former supervisors has a son adopted from Kazakhstan. I believe the only time they traveled was to meet him and bring him home. They adopted 10+ years ago, though, so the regulations and procedures have probably changed since then.

@Alivoo01: For now, I'm just a serious consideration. I've thrown the idea out to DH and letting it marinate.
@PurplePeony: Thank for your response. Kazakhstan doesn't seem to be such a popular choice, but it's good to know that there has been adoptions.The blogs I've found online are all pretty dated.
The adoption agencies have different estimates on the required travel time (some say you must travel three times, some say twice with 60 days to 2 weeks during the first time). I'll dig around some more and hopefully there'll be more recent stories.

It appears that Kazakhstan closed international adoptions on 2008 and was expected to re-open in the beginning of 2014 for the US.
I live in Europe and there's only 1 adoption agency that currently has open adoptions for Kazakhstan - but it's their pilot program. I don't think the children have completed adoption yet (for 2014).
I think I'll make the initial step and send a real inquiry. 
I know it's not much, but it feels like a huge step.

@Mrs. Pen: The agency I was looking into is closing down. I found out that the children from Kazakhstan have completed adoption But they will be the only ones since no other agency offers adoption from that country (where we're at). I was really interested in Kazakhstan, specifically, because of the number of Eurasian children that need homes. DD is mixed European/Asian. It would have been a plus for the kids to look somewhat alike.

it is amazing to me how many countries severely restrict adoption or don't allow it at all. We just want to give the children a home. I remember studying Romanian orphanages in my sociology class, and when I was reading about the lack of care I wanted to adopt- but they don't allow outside adoptions

Just curious why you aren't looking to adopt a child in the US? Lots of kids in this country need a home too! (not trying to sound snarky, just genuinely curios why you'd choose another country)

@alphagam84: answering in case @SugarplumsMom: doesn't see your post... she's not in the US she also mentioned above wanting to adopt a Eurasian child if possible, since that it what her daughter is as well.
@SugarplumsMom: that's such a shame that Kazakhstan closed their adoptions via that agency hopefully it's only temporary.

We live abroad and the country I live in (Sweden) only has international adoptions available. There are no Swedish children waiting to be adopted.

@SugarplumsMom: I can't remember, but are you a US citizen? And your DH is Swedish, right? Just curious about the laws there. We haven't looked too much into it here yet, but I'm assuming the processes would be similar? It's definitely the same re. no local children. I look forward to hearing more about this if you pursue it.

I'm sorry that the program is closed. We had been interested in Mongolia for awhile, but they only process 1-2 international adoptions a year and only under exceptional circumstances. It's really hard because those countries who do a ton of adoptions tend to have some less than savory practices and those that do few don't have a robust system to facilitate adoptions. Makes it really hard.

@TheSwissWifeStyle: DH is Swedish and I'm now a dual citizen: US & Sweden. There's only a handful of adoption agencies available here and I've noticed that most require both parents to have Swedish citizenship (not the adoption agency themselves but the prospective country's requirement).
From my understanding, there are no Swedish orphanages. Children in need go into foster homes and the responsibility to find them homes falls into the municipality. But international adoption is very common.
