Our dog's water is in the kitchen, and suddenly our baby is very interested. We're in a craftsman, which thankfully means a pretty closed floor plan with the ability to put up baby gates. BUT, we don't want to keep the dogs in the kitchen, and I don't want to block them from their water. Please tell me I'm missing an obvious solution here!!

For me it's mostly involved vigilance and scolding! They catch on after awhile!

I never moved the food or water - just kept telling the kids "no" and it eventually sunk it.
And yes, they ate their fair share of dog food and played in the water bowls numerous time

Ha! About baby eating the dog food. We are vegan, and the dogs are not, so it's something I'm really cautious about. And of course, we watch her all the time ... She's just so fast, and I feel bad for always saying no and redirecting.

We have a doggie door, so we put the water outside when we are going to have LO in the kitchen/living room area. If we don't do that, we just try to be super vigilant. Also, we need to swap out her bowls for metal ones because the current ones are ceramic and will surely get broken.

We ended up moving the water and food over by the back door, so we could position a baby gate up to the couch. Poor doggy has to hop over the couch to get to his stuff, but it was a necessity for me. It was a constant battle to keep her out of his stuff and then I had to wash her hands every time and I felt like I had to wash his bowls. I couldn't take it anymore lol.

We have a small dog, so we put the gate a few inches off the floor so that the dog could get under but not the baby. Only problem was that it was hard for us to get over it. Now we've switched to using a hamster-like water bottle. It's lashed to a gate and the baby leaves it alone.

@Vegmama: we ended up just putting it up when DS went for it. He is fast and persistent (and the water is SO MUCH FUN! Haha). We have another water bowl outside and I've noticed our dog will go out just to drink water. It works. The food is up if DS is around. And at nap and bed time we put the food down so she can eat. DS tried to eat the dog food once, and he almost choked, so that was super scary and we don't take a chance anymore!

Maybe keep it in their kennel so it's hidden from her a little. I mean Cage

I feel like I spend the whole day putting the cats bowls up and down from the counter! DS makes a beeline for it straight away if he sees I've forgotten. Luckily the cat ensures there is never any food in the bowl, so it's just water getting thrown around the kitchen! Hoping at some point it will sink in that he's not allowed to play with it.

We put it in the bathroom. It's out of sight so baby didn't bother it and we were already watching her to make sure she didn't go in the bathroom.

What about a water dispenser? Something like this until baby gets tired of the water bowl. We have one for my dog and he's a lazy ass so he literally will lay in his crate and lick his bottle.

I'm really surprised but she actually learned not to go into the bowls. I just kept saying no and redirecting and saying no, repeat. She would go over to that corner and look at me and smile but not touch anything in the bowls. I was shocked. But if a piece of food falls out of the bowl to the floor she thinks it's fair game and I've pulled those out of her mouth. Ew.

Haha we are working on this too. I have to keep our cats bowls in a closet. I crack the door so he can get in and out, but if lo gets interested i can shut the door while i distract him woth something else.

At first I kept putting the water and food up high or outside with the dog, but then I decided that LO was going to have to learn not to touch certain things. It took a little while, but now he rarely gets into it. Every so often he takes a dog water bath.

Do you have a basement? Our dog's water and food was kept in the basement along with his crate. We lived in a split level, so the baby gate was open or closed depending where my brother was at the time. For the most part our dog still had the run of the house without much assistance from a human opening a gate.
