I also read this/the David McCullough speech they refer to! Apparently there was a big outcry against it, but I think it was actually very true and very uplifting!

@hilsy85: I've heard snippets ... I'll read the whole thing when I have more time. But what I've heard/read rings very true!

I think it's genius. When I first read it, I emailed it to my husband and said "We should make our kids read this once a year." Being taught that "everyone wins" is a disservice to our children.

Love it...
"even if you're 1 in a million...there's nearly 7,000 like you" - that made me chuckle...sounds like one of those sayings that are added to funny pictures and circulates around Facebook.

Love this article! It's sooooo true! I think it's really important to make sure kids know the reality of the world. No matter how special they are to their family, they're really not that special to the rest of the world, and it's better to know and understand that early on, I think.

Love it! I never understood why kids were being discouraged from trying harder/doing better with a particular task. I remember growing up and our sports teams actually lost instead of everyone getting a trophy because "no one is better than anyone else". It definitely prepares you for the real world's disappointments, and kids need that!

I love it and completely agree with him. Kids now are so coddled You have to know your own shortcomings so you can work on them. I'm a realist and I would prefer my kids to be too.
