Dh just got offered a job in King of Prussia (right by IKEA actually) . any recommendations for reasonable places to rent that are family friendly and have good school districts? We live 2 hours away in NEPA , so we're not to familiar with the area!

I used to work in KoP and I commuted from Pottstown, West Chester and Downingtown areas. The commute was about 45-60 minutes depending on the time of day.
I have always lived in the Chester County areas and West Chester and Downingtown districts are good. The best school district in Chester County is Tredyffrin... but housing prices is very high. I think it depends on your budget. I have friends and family that live in Royerford, Phoenixville, Norristown, Abington, Malvern, Berwyn and the list could go on and all. If I were to move back to the area, I would be happy with pretty much every city in Chester County. Coatesville & Thorndale areas might be kinda iffy. It would depend on what school district they fall into. As for Montgomery county where my sister lives in Sanatoga (Pottstown), I'm not familiar with all the cities in that county but I would definitely consider moving there because it's tad more affordable than Chester County. The only downside is Rt 422 can be a pain in the butt to drive in the morning but there are back roads. Some people hate it.

congrats! I live about 25 min away in Willow grove/abington area..... I know pretty much anywhere on the main line Radnor, Bryn Mawr, East Norriton, Gladwyn are really nice areas. my aunt & uncle live in newtown square/radnor and just loved their school system

We live about 20 minutes west! (Around were bluestripe is talking about). 422 heading east in the am is a huge pain in the ass. To get from here to KOP around 8am would be about an hour commute. Not many ways to get around it as there's only so many ways to get over the schuykill river! We love this area (we both grew up in CNY) it would really depend on what you think is reasonable as far as location.

We live in Chester County and I commute to the KOP area. I love where we live and think it is a great place for a family. Some towns would be out of the question for me but it depends what your needs are- like you, school district is important to me. There are many great school districts in the area so I think we're fortunate to have options. Let me know if you'd like to chat about any specifics!

We live in Delaware County so definitely commuting distance to KoP... Wallingford/Swarthmore and rose tree Media schools are both very highly rated.

@stargal: I went to school down the road in Bryn Mawr and the Main Line is amazing! Literally anything from Paoli to St. Joe's! Not sure about renting but great school districts should be aplenty! Good luck!
Ps is your husband at Lockheed?

@mamabolt: @MOMTOLITTLEB: @Cupcake: @Chillybear: @bluestriped bee: thank you! We're really excited and nervous. I am a little nervous about the col as we are kinda young just starting in our careers (accounting and social work). So money is tight but I def need to find something safe and in a decent area with good schools for when our coldest starts school (he's three right now). We are not picky about what type of apartment or need anything huge. Primarily o just want a family friendly area that won't kill our bank account lol

@HTownMom: My dad (now retired) worked at Lockheed.

@bluestriped bee: awesome! I had a couple of friends who are BMC Alumnae who worked there!

@stargal: no worries, that's just one of the biggest companies literally next to KOP!!
Also, that area has some AMAZING shopping so watch out for your budget, like you mentioned!
If it's a small company, maybe see if your husband can get some rec's from some of the moms there? Or because there are so many colleges in the area, find some good graduate housing or rec's that they put on their site!!

@HTownMom: Yup, KoP mall is huge! I used to work there part time right after college. I haven't been there in a long time. I can't believe they are connecting the Court and the Plaza. I remember in high school having to use that crosswalk to shop at Macy's.

@bluestriped bee: They're connecting the Court and the Plaza!? Woah!
@stargal: We lived in Abington, which is about 25 minutes from KOP. If you take back roads between the 2, the commute is pretty smooth. Do you know where you are going to work? If you think you might work in Center City (you mentioned social work, and I was a social worker at a hospital in the city), you'll want to be on a train line. So the Abington/Jenkintown area would be good for both of you. Or the Main Line as many others have mentioned.
But you mentioned his company is right near IKEA, which is actually in Conshohocken, not KOP. I'm not sure about schools in Conshy, but that's a cute little town in and of itself. A lot of nice little towns are just across the river from Conshy, too - Ardmore, Haverford, Radnor. All along the Main Line.

@littlebug: yup! It's gonna be huge! I think they said it would be the largest Mall in the country for a few months until the mall of America completes their expansion. I think 2018, it might be finished. I saw the article last year.
ETA: expansion will be finished this fall 2016. http://www.philly.com/philly/business/20160302_King_of_Prussia_Mall_expansion_takes_another_step.html?mobi=true

What about the Lansdale area? Rent seems to be a little cheaper (its about 25 min commute to my hubbys work).

@littlebug: I don't know where I will be working yet (I just graduated with my bachelors in may) I would like to find something though! how is the area for social work jobs? I know a lot of agencies these days want masters, which I sadly don't have if you don't mind can I pm you, with some questons about living in Abington?

My first thought was, they put an IKEA in KOP? Are you sure it'snot the one in Plymouth Meeting? I actually grew up in that town and went to the public school system (Colonial School District) and its a very well-ranked school district, and I find the home prices to be a little more reasonable than the Main Line (though I DO love Radnor, Wayne, etc). Theres a big metroplex there with Target, Gap, Carters, etc, and the plymouth meeting mall just went through a huge makeover and has some great family friendly restaurants. Conshohocken is really popular with young families now. I'm a big fan of where I lived. AND I'm a social worker! I got my MSW while living down there. So any info you need, just PM me.

@stargal: It's nice up there. North Penn school district is well-regarded. Just be careful - I think there can be some shadier areas (as in any town)

@Tidybee: i just saw ikea and got really excited (we don't have one where we live!) umm his work address says king of Prussia. I am kinda still trying to figure out the area, I'm clueless! LOL. I'm gonna pm you!
hostess / wonderful apple seed / 16729 posts
@Tidybee: Yeah, the only IKEA in that area is the Plymouth Meeting but I think the mailing address is Conshohocken.
I worked at a company near the mall and the mailing address is KoP.

@stargal: I used to live in the Lansdale area and loved it! Trying to get back there, actually. Lots of shopping and the school district is great. Lansdale actually encompasses a large area. I'm not a big fan of Lansdale borough, but the surrounding area is great.

Chesterbrook or Glenhardie! You will be zoned for my elementary which was just ranked #34 in the country

@stargal: I've been living in abington for the past 7 years we're actually moving in 2 weeks, i'd be happy to chat.

@stargal: If it's really Plymouth Meeting/Conshohocken area, north of there is lovely. Abington, Horsham, Lansdale areas all have great school districts, and are close to Ikea in Plymouth Meeting. I go to that area once/week and live just above Lansdale. It's about a 30 minute commute.
