I am surprised by all of the laminate lovers.
I would have to go with hardwood.
ETA - nothing against laminate - I have seen some that I love. I just prefer hardwood.

Our laminate sucks and scratches pretty easily despite all the claims I've heard to the contrary. I'm not a fan!

@Torchwood: we had ours redone with a Loba topcoat and there wasn't any smell!
I hate laminate. The chemicals in it gross me out and I think it looks cheap 9 times out of 10. My parents hardwoods withheld a decade of a 100 lb dog and three kids and look great. Our newly refinished hardwoods look great so far with a toddler and dog! We didn't like the color they were stained and there were a few paint and bleach spots (hence the refinishing).

@matador84: I also liked that hopefully they could just be refinished for years to come instead of thrown away and replaced.

Hardwood, if I had my preferences as well as no animals and no kids. I think they look gorgeous. I don't like the way laminate sounds when you walk on it- almost tinny.
That being said, I think we're getting some laminate put in. We have a dog and two kids, so putting in hard to maintain floor, especially in the kitchen, would just be stupid.

I'm surprised so many people dislike laminate. We always get lots of compliments on the style we had installed!

Hardwood! Our 1950's house has the original, except for our bedroom which was an addition. The laminate is ok but it doesn't look as good.
Our condo has engineered hardwood and I love those floors.

@blackbird: same! Unless I tell people they have no idea it isn't hardwood!
