So...DH thinks I am off my rocker...I need to poll some ladies who may have experience with this.
DH and I bought our house 2 years ago and have extensively renovated it (property brothers style). Our big list of things to do is dwindling...basically down to the rest of the windows (we did the second floor - just need to do the first), landscaping, 'finishing' the garage and then decorating.
We are refinancing now to lower our rate...after we refi we will be at an LTV of around 65-70%...I feel great about this. I told DH I want to take a home equity loan out for the money to complete our landscaping. He thinks 1) the amount I want to take is ridiculous and 2) its not appropriate to take a home loan for this.
Scope of work: We DIY'd most of the front yard and have taken it back to ground zero with just mulch and 50% of the plants necessary to be finished. I want to finish the plantings - basically some boxwoods/ewe's to complete the beds. The grass in the front is fine. The back yard is a nightmare. Basically the 85 yr old woman we bought from did not trim any of the 7 60 year old oak trees for year, making them over grown and completely shading the yard. There is no grass, just dirt and moss. I want to grade it (smooth the grading), seed, run mulch and a 4' bed around the perimeter of the house (to be planted later once we assess the true shade/sun situation).
I estimated (based on loose discussions with landscapers (going to get real quotes next week) that the cost would be $4k for the back yard and $2k for the front. DH thinks $6k is "very high" and "is way too much to spend on landscaping". Am I crazy? Would you spend the kind of money I am talking about if you could financially afford it? FWIW - our home value is $450k-500k...
