I remember reading under my insurance pamphlet that new babies and mom receive a free visit from a nurse post pregnancy. Which makes me wonder if insurance would cover, at least, a preliminary LC visit post delivery?
Has anyone had a LC visit covered under insurance?
If not, how much was your LC visit?

we have ridiculously outstanding insurance. and zero LC visits were covered. I was so so so upset. I'm not sure if it's changed since then obviously - that was fall 2012. I did get to see a LC during my hospital stay but that wasn't much of a help because my milk hadn't even come in, you know?
eta: we did have a visiting nurse come several times free of charge. I don't think that had anything to do with insurance though. she never helped with breastfeeding latch, etc.

Only covered while in the hospital during your maternity stay
eta: never realized it wasn't included - we were active duty military with DS so it was free - I saw an LC for a few months with all the issues I was having - wouldn't have been covered with DD so good thing we didn't have issues!

Ours was included as part of our hospital stay with my daughter.
I think there may be ways to have it covered under insurance but you may have to apply for reimbursement yourself.

Feels covered, per HHS.gov (but worth clarifying from your insruance as to the timeframe for the counseling services):
22 Covered Preventive Services for Women, Including Pregnant Women
The eight new prevention-related health services marked with an asterisk ( * ) must be covered with no cost-sharing in plan years starting on or after August 1, 2012.
6.Breastfeeding comprehensive support and counseling from trained providers, as well as access to breastfeeding supplies, for pregnant and nursing women*

An LC visited while we were in the hospital.
At the time of birth I was on an aetna plan and they covered up to 6 visits with an LC after birth. I took advantage and used 2 visits at breast feeding resource center near my home. It was wonderful!
In January, my insurance changed, i went back to work and i was having supply issues. I tried to go back to the Center and my insurance no longer covered the appointments. They only covered it if the visit was at my Ped office. My Ped office recommends this place but they have their own facility. I ended up doing a phone Consult and it cost $40 but was very helpful esp since they already had 2 appts worth of background info.

@locavore_mama: mine was covered. My LC gave me a superbill that I submitted to my insurance for a reimbursement.
Eta: mine was the LC from my hospital but she told me in the hospital she also does home visits, so when we started having problems I asked her to come out to my house twice. I also went to the weekly support groups the LC was at for weighted feeds and advice, and those were free.
My insurance tried to deny it at first, but I called and went up the chain and in the end, it was reimbursed 100%, which was great! because she was $225 a visit.

@MamaG: Thats what i thought too, however many insurances dont accept LCs as trained providers - especially if they are independant of a Doctors office. It feels like they found a loop hole not to cover the visits.
My advice is to call your insurance and see if they can help you find a provider/LC that accepts you insurance, or look for a pediatrician that has an trained LC on staff.

We saw a bunch of LCs while were still in the hospital. I THINK those were covered. We never had an LC visit our home, so I'm not sure about that, but when I visited the LC a couple times after we were home (6 weeks and ~5 months), they didn't even charge us. It was just a free service our hospital offered.

@Chillybear: @Anagram: thanks. Now that I know it's not unheard of I'm going to call my insurance.
My ped does have an LC on staff so that'll be my backup.
My hospital is very pro breastfeeding so a LC visit prior to discharge is routine. However, I do NOT like their head LC. I might even refuse her visit this time.

We were reimbursed for some of the cost of the LC home visits, maybe $100 or $150? The LC provided an invoice with some sort of registration number, and we got the money back with no problem.

We paid out of pocket for the home visit ($125) and could not get it reimbursed for some reason. Our other visits were covered though! We returned to see two of the LCs at the hospital, then continued to see an LC at our ped's office and those were all covered.

We went to multiple LCs and IBCLCs for M during the first three months, all of which were covered. Our insurance covers five visits per baby.

We have an HMO and it was all covered.
I saw two in the hospital and one at our 2 day post-hospital visit instead of a pediatrician. I also had several phone consults - including one last week about weaning at 16 months.
