Lead paint is just as dangerous to pregnant women. If the lead paint is cracked and peeling - i.e. causing chips- it needs to be removed before the baby comes along and could ingest it. If it is intact and you can just paint over it, do so because the new paint will seal in the lead paint. The big worry with lead paint is the dust. So old windows and doors where the paint is being rubbed when they open and shut. Or if you decide to re-paint woodwork and you sand down the old paint. If you need to remove the lead paint, the best way is by stripping it rather than sanding. And you definitely should not be anywhere near the removal and clean up process.

My dad is a general contractor who has to deal with the lead based paint crap on a daily basis. He's had to take classes, get certified, buy special equipment, etc. His professional opinion is just that it's another thing for the government to freak us out about and charge fines for not doing exactly what they say. He says that unless you go around eating the lead paint chips or chewing on your window sill then there's absolutely no reason to be worried. If you're remodeling your house and the paint is chipping or your tearing a wall down then use a little caution, otherwise. Don't worry.
