I don't necessarily think people think they're a new thing. I think that fashion has just evolved to wearing things that are appropriate for your body type. In the 80's and 90's soooo many women who should not have worn leggings as pants did, in fact, wear them as pants. Which I think is the message being expressed today?

I could just be talking about of my butt though.

I totally wore leggings in the 80's and 90's with shirts!

I think its like when they are see through it gets shady or maybe when your are older as a woman its more, seductive ( ex- why guys like yoga pants...) or weird as opposed to little girls cute outfits?

Leggings as pants on a kid are fine. But also, they usually aren't nearly as tight as the ones adult women would wear, plus kids don't have any curves to make them extra tight in the thighs and butt. Even as a kid, once I hit puberty I followed the big shirt covering my butt rule-- more because I was self conscious than stylish, mind you. But the totally big shirts were in then, so it was fine usually. I think, but what do I know, I was a kid.

@Mrs. Pen: Oh, I'm sure you looked great. I'm just afraid of mooning my eight year old students. You can never be too careful with the potential of a sheer legging booty.

Oh my I am totally guilty of wearing leggings and yoga pants like every other day! Even as a kid though, always with longer tops that cover the bum!

I always thought that the people nowadays that wear leggings and think they are new are the ones who weren't really old enough to remember the 80s. I do rememeber them, which is why I will not be caught dead in leggings.

ahh well... i used to be totally against leggings as pants or in any situation.

then i tried them with dresses in the winter and got hooked... then i bought a tunic and wore them with the leggings... haha the first time i wore it at work (casual environment with kids) i felt soooo naked!

but i've totally gotten over it and wear them as pants with tunics all the time the comfort level of this ensemble outweights any fashion faux pas that might occur. SOOOO comfortable! esp with boots!

haha i agree, as long as the bum is covered. both sides.

anyone remember wearing stirrup pants?

@Mrs. Pen: I like your rules. But in that case, I don't think of them as pants, I think of them as very very thick tights that you can wear with a very short dress (ie tunic). If crotch and bum are both totally covered, then you aren't wearing leggings as pants. At least, that's my theory.

@.twist.: Don't be jealous, but I totally had stirrup pants. Also rocked two pairs of giant socks over leggings, and if I was feeling crazy, I alternated which color was on the bottom (like, pink and blue on one foot, then blue and pink on the other). I guess I feel better about my mom never letting me get a perm.

I love putting my baby in legging... but no, for me as an adult, leggings are not pants.

I loved stirrup pants! I wore them with slouch socks and my black reebok hitops. I was so stylish!

I had lace leggings as a kid too! They were regular leggings but had a few inches of that stretchy lace around the ankle. They went great with keds.

Ah I used to love the stirrups when I was 8! And I thought I was just too cool! But as an adult, I never wore leggings until I was pregnant and then thought they were just the most comfy things out there. I wore them to work all the time but my excuse was - hey I'm 8 months pregnant, I don't think you're really going to try telling me what to wear right now. I still wear them when I know I'm not going to be leaving the house that day b/c - still so comfy!

Ugh, today I saw a teenage girl walking down the sidewalk wearing sheer black leggings with some sort of cropped top. And she had a lot of junk in her trunk. It was no bueno.
