How long did your labor last with your 2nd or 3Rd (etc) child compared to your 1st? What factors do you think influenced this? I'm think start of labor= timeable/noticeable contractions, water broke, or being induced.

LO was 13 hours from timeable contractions to baby
LO2 was 7 hours from start of pitocin to baby.
Eta: pushing was 40 minutes with both but that was because DS2 had a very short cord and wasn't budging.

DD1- 34 hours (induction)
DD2- 3.5 hours (came on her own, fast & furious!)

LO1 - 36 hours
LO2 - less than 3 hours of pain, more like four hours of contractions but the first hour was very easy labor

I didn't know how to answer the poll, so I figured I would just write out my response.
LO1 Water broke 4:30 AM, I was in denial and thought I was peeing myself ALL DAY, so I didn't know I was "in labor" until I had my regular check up that afternoon and was sent straight to the hospital. No contractions until they gave me cervadil. From the start of contractions to delivery, my first labor was shorter.
LO2 My water broke around 7:30 PM, and this time I knew what was happening Went to the hospital, no painful contractions, they gave me Pitocin, and I had the baby about 10 hours later.
Long story short, shorter labor with contractions with LO1 but shorter time overall from water breaking with LO2.

1- 25 hours from first contractions, about 10 hours from what I consider active labor.
2- 3.5 hours from "could this actually be labor?" to baby.

DS1 - 24+ hours from early labor to birth (2 hours pushing) born 16 hours from hospital from hospital admittance
DS2 - 6 hours from water breaking to birth (10 min pushing); born less than two hours from hospital admittance

Both were induced but I was much less favorable with my first, but responded better to the induction with my first. Overall though the second baby was much faster (and much less pushing time which is whats really important! ).

LO 1-- about 28 hours long, more than 14 hours active labor
LO2-- 2.5 hours from any sign at all to baby. 1 hour active

LO #1: 14 hours
LO #2: 8 hours. He would have arrived earlier if they didn't stall labor to get antibiotics in for GBS.

LO1 - (40 weeks) 12 hours from start of consistent contractions to birth (no water breaking).
LO2 - (38 weeks) 7 hours from water breaking to birth.
My contractions were less painful the second time around and LO2 practically shot out with very little pushing (the Doc wasn't even in the room yet).

#1 -- 16 hours (1 hour 30 minutes pushing)

LO1 was 13 hours from first contraction to baby. I pushed for 1.5-2 hours.
LO2 was an induction and my labor was 7.5 hours from the start of pitocin to baby. I only pushed for 3-5 minutes.

Much , much faster.
28 hours of labour for dd1 including 3 hours of pushing. She was posterior which slowed things down.
Dd2 I went to the hospital and was 1cm. An hour later I was 2cm. An hour after that I was 10cm and the nurses were begging me not to push because the dr wasn't there. It was like 45 mins from 2cm-baby is out .

My first was 57 hours from the time I was admitted to the emergency c-section.
My next two were repeat c-sections. I labored enough with my first.

DS1 - 24 hrs. I was Induced and but my epi failed. I think my body had a hard time handling the contractions so it couldn't relax and let him come down easily.
DS2 - 9 hours. Also induced but the epi took and was glorious. Super fast.

DD 1- 22 hours long and started with my water breaking. Pushed for 45 mins.
DD 2- 4.5 hours long from the first timeable contractions. Pushed for 10 mins.

LO1: 28 hours, with 3 hours of pushing
LO2: 3.5 hours, with <5 minutes of pushing.
I think having had a baby 16 months earlier made LO2's very easy Also, I had 3 weeks of prodromal labor with LO2, so I think I made a lot of progress without being in active labor.

From first contraction to baby:
About 9 hours with LO1.
45 minutes with LO2.

@sslm: selfishly gotta admit, it's encouraging to me! My 1st labor (12 days ago) was 25 hours, with contractions every other minute for about half and contractions every 2-3 minutes for the other half. So exhausting!!
watermelon / 14467 posts
@sslm: I'm a little worried too. My last labor was 15 hours, I don't know how I would deal with a faster or slower labor.
grapefruit / 4278 posts
@sslm: Right! 38 weeks with #2 and I'm kinda glad I work at the hospital I'm delivering at.
pineapple / 12234 posts
Lo1: 8 hours but 3 of those was pushing
Lo2: 6 hours (induced), pushed for 15 minutes
Lo3: 3 hours, two pushes
pomegranate / 3580 posts
@sslm: Ditto! We live an hour from the hospital we deliver at and I was terrified of that drive with #1, and now with #2 I'm even more worried!

DD1 - 11 hours from water breaking and 1st contraction, 55 minutes of pushing.
DD2 - 12 hours from water breaking but I didn't have contractions until 4 hours later. So I labored for 8 hours and had only 5 minutes of pushing (2 sets of pushes).
pineapple / 12053 posts
7 hours versus 4 hours after water breaking spontaneously for both.
pomegranate / 3601 posts
Both longer and shorter the second time. While early labor was longer, active painful labor was only 20 minutes the second time. (Went from 4cm to baby in less than half an hour).
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
Much much much shorter. First was about 20 hours. Second was like..3 hours! But I was also induced with #2 and the OB broke my water.

This thread gives me hope, if we ever decide to try for another! My first was 20 hours of labor with contractions every 5 minutes or closer the entire time. I went med-free and most of labor was fairly manageable but the 3 hours of pushing was brutal. If I'm being honest, I have no desire to go through that pushing again. I'd just get the epi at 9 cm. But if pushing was significantly easier/faster the second time around, I'd probably go med-free again. Something for me to think about...
