DH took a week off with DS1. He went back to work....and was "laid off" the next day. He ended up being home for a good 2-3 months. While it was GREAT for bonding and helping me, it was definitely stressful. The week he took off was unpaid.

This time, he's probably just going to take a few days. If I make it to my c-sec (which is scheduled to be a wednesday), he will prob take off 3 days (and the weekend) while I recover, then my mom will take over. It will be unpaid again.

He will take 2 weeks off for this LO...he will have to work from home a bit during that time but at least he will be here.

Since we are in Canada we could technically split and share the year off - but it would be very difficult to live off of his reduced salary. Plus I like having the year I've only known a couple of fathers to take a part of the leave - most of the time the mom takes the whole thing and the SO takes vacation or gets a couple weeks from their company at birth.

Dh gets 5 days paid paternity leave. Last time he took a few extra as vacation, then my mom, then his mom, came and stayed, then he took a few long weekends here and there for extra time. Most was paid vacation time.

This time baby is due a week before Christmas, so he will take the five days paternity then vacation time probably through the end of the year. We will have some visitors then too.

He took about a month. LO was born early December, so there were a number of holidays in there, and he took vacation for the rest and also worked from home a few days here and there. It worked out really nicely.

DH gets 7 weeks of paid leave but he took it when DS was 4 months old. He took a week of vacation when he was born.

DH is a writer on a freelance contract and has worked it out so he can take 2 weeks off in the beginning when she is born, and then 2 weeks off when I go back to work to help transition with childcare. I work 6am-2pm usually. DH mostly works from home. We are planning on childcare 9-2 3 days a week and DH will watch her and work from home the other 2 days a week until I get home at 2pm. Hoping our plan is solid!

DH was allowed 4 weeks of paid paternity leave. He took 1.5-2 weeks with both and then used the rest over the next few months to take a day off here and there. It was nice to have him home for those first couple of weeks!

With DS1, DH took a total of 6 weeks. It was a combined time off with PTO, holidays, paternity leave, and some extra time that his boss offered him at the time.

With DS2, DH will be taking a few weeks off but it will be on/off with going back to work instead of all at once. It's just the nature of his position now that he wouldn't be able to take such a long chunk of time off.

With lo1 he took 5 weeks unpaid. Lo2 two weeks paid. He was at two different jobs with different benefits and responsibilities so that's what made sense at the time.

With LO1, he took about 5 (paid) days off. This time, he'll be home for about 2 weeks before he has to go back to work because school will be starting back up (teacher).

DH had two weeks paid. I think he technically could have taken four weeks per firm policy, but two weeks is what everyone does at his office.

He took a week and a half off using sick time.

Both girls were born on Wednesdays so just W-Sun both times. First time was unpaid second time was paid using PTO.

He took 4 weeks of PTO for #1 and 5 weeks of PTO for #2. I'm very grateful to both him and his company for the amount of time he took off to help me with the babies.

DH gets 6 weeks paid paternity leave. I'm not sure how much he is going to take.

He took 2 weeks. I think he could have taken 3 but he had to get back and finish a project but at least he worked from home a couple days a week.

I think now he gets 6 weeks. But he won't be able to get it. You take too much time off and it hurts his metrics, which determines bonus and raise.

D was born on a Thursday. He took Thursday, Friday, Monday, and Tuesday off. Back to work Wednesday when my mom came to stay with me for a few days. Those 4 days were paid, but he had to use vacation time.

We had DS in mid November, and DH was able to take about 6 weeks off. It was an amalgamation of vacation time, holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's) and then about 2 weeks unpaid.

He now works at a company that offers 4 weeks paternity leave. On top of that I think he'll do another 2 weeks of personal time/vacation.

@mrbee: Yes, part of it will overlap. DS is due mid-November, so she will have to finish out the semester right after his birth and I will be home, but from mid-December til mid-April she is off (and then the summer, kind of, too) and I have until mid-Feb. So 8 weeks home together!
