I didn't take any leave at all with either of our kids, partly because I was working from home but also because I'm self-employed and don't have access to paid leave. But looking back, that was a mistake... especially for our first child. I wish I had taken a month or so of leave to get that deep bond which only came a year or so later, when Bee got pregnant with our second child and I took over nights with our toddler. And most of all, childcare patterns tend to get set in those early days and I would've been a better husband and father if I had contributed more in that first year.
How long did your SO take for paternity/parental leave? How much of it was paid?
I've only known a couple of fathers to take a part of the leave - most of the time the mom takes the whole thing and the SO takes vacation or gets a couple weeks from their company at birth.
do you believe the time off he took was part of why he got laid off?
