I need to buy winter boots for 3 kiddos (2,5,7). In all my years shopping, boots are the one item I still do not have a go-to brand for. They always complain about something- too clunky, too heavy, too tight, too-everything you can think of. Must be good for snow, comfortable, and not super expensive. Suggestions??? TIA!

I get Merrell Snowbank boots for my 8 year old son.
They tick all the boxes for me. The flexible sole is super. We are on our third pair (grew out of the other sizes, I typically get 2 years out of boots).

Maybe there'll be some good Black Friday deals on Bogs? Because they really are great and have the longevity to go through multiple kids, despite the price.

@shabang: @snowjewelz: so the insulated bogs are warm enough to play in the snow for a while? And snow doesn’t come in through the top? I’ve seen them and read rave reviews but they just don’t look warm and dry enough for a couple of hours in the snow. I’m in New England and my kid just played in the snow this morning wearing rain boots because the old snow boots are way too small. Oops.

@Foodnerd81: I can't speak to "for a while" b/c DD1 has never played in the snow for more than like 10 minutes
I mean if she wears them with regular pants she will get snow in; but if she wears with snow pants/bibs then I think the "seal" is pretty good.

@Foodnerd81: Bogs are super warm! Rated to -30F. DD and I both wear the classic bog boots and both love them.

@Foodnerd81: If we're playing in the snow, snowpants are on top of the boots, so we've never had snow come in. Their hands and faces get cold before feet, and I've never heard a complaint. And, they're comfortable enough that my 5yo will wear them all day. These are the first boots I've bought where there's no battle about wearing them and they're easy on/off.
That said, the cost, eek. If you can find them used, that's probably the way to go, but they're snapped up like crazy on local buy/sell/trade sites.

@Baby Boy Mom: my older daughter had Hatley boots that I randomly got a good deal on on amazon that she loved. Wore them to school every day, snow or shine, and would wear them the whole day even though i brought sneakers too. I don’t know if it was the pattern or they were reallythat comfortable but I’m sad that I can’t jam her feet into them anymore. She wore them for two winters though and never complained.

My son goes to an outdoor preschool and in general spends a lot of time outside in the frigid, wet winter here in NY. So we have the LLBean boots that come with 2 liners, OakiWear (rain and cold but maybe not great for heavy snow like we get here), Bogs were great, but honestly his boots from Target we have had for 2 years and they are AWESOME also. (His Oakis are his favorite because they are easy to get on. The preschool recommended them)

All the suggestions for bogs are making me reconsider them. I had a tried a pair for myself and thought they were on the heavy side but maybe the kids’ version is better?

@Mamaof2: those look like a good option as well! They might fall under the too rigid category but for that price point I think I will give them a try!

DD loves her Pinky Footwear snow boots, wears them almost every day. I got them on Zulily in Navy for $12.

Our second-hand shops are always loaded with winter boots. I don't get to be too picky about brand, but there are usually lots of options for LO to try on, and I feel much better about the limited wear when I only pay $10. (I got Lands End boots this year.)

So if you live in a very cold climate they might not be warm enough but DS and I both really like Croc winter boots. They are the lightest I’ve found.

My son loves his Bogs.... you can often find them second-hand in excellent condition since kids grow out of them so fast! Do you have a kids consignment shop near you?

Got Cat&Jack snowboots at Target for DS last year. They were like $15 and he could get them on and off himself. We live in the mid-Atlantic so while it snows here it's not like several feet and it's usually not colder than 30 degrees.
