I'm with @Bookworm: I think a pendant light in that wide of a space might be too skinny and long.

I would do either something like this with the wider light fixture or multiple smaller pendants.

I have fluorescent lights in my kitchen too. Gives it a nice, cozy institutional feel! (Kidding. But we rent, so they're going to stay, regardless of my feelings about them.)

I like the multiple-pendant idea, although I'd pick something smaller than the ones in the photos above so they'd be less intrusive. I don't much care for single pendants--they often read "interrogation room" to me, and I don't think I'd like that while washing dishes, you know?
