I wouldn't say spam, but some of the contacts might be recruiters essentially cold calling so that they have a larger pool of potential applicants/access to your network.

I typically won't accept any of the connections unless we have actually communicated about a specific role.

I've been contacted a few times, and I figured it's worth a talk/meeting. So far, they've been legit, just not in the right city!

I hear from several recruiters a week on LinkedIn (I'm in an industry with very rapid growth). I wouldn't say that they're all spam per se, but I would say that 99% of them are completely irrelevant. Lots of crappy or lazy recruiters use LinkedIn in a spray-and-pray manner, like if they reach out to a thousand people, maybe a handful will be interested, qualified, and a general good fit.

Most of the recruiting messages I get are for jobs that I'm over- or under-qualified for, and the rest are for jobs across the country when I have no interest in moving.

All of the offers Ive been messaged about directly were legit. I do not add requests to network with people I dont know though. Im in the industry and have found that most ppl are seriously seeking out candidates. Respond! !!

It's usually legit, especially if it's from someone at the actual company. Headhunters can be a little sketchy though, sometimes they make up stories about having open positions, then once they get your resume the position "poof!" disappears.

My old company was super cheap and this is how they would recruit. Our internal recruiters would "email" people on LinkedIn and see if they were interested. But they were legit offers.
