LO has a moderate flat spot (positional plagiocephaly) due to torticollis. We've been referred by our pediatrician and our PT for a helmet. I feel so bad, like I did something wrong even though logical tells me it was out of my control.
If your LO needed a helmet, how long did they have to wear it?

My nephew wore one for a couple of months-- I forget exactly how long, but it wasn't that long and it never bothered him. His parents said the only thing that bothered him was when we took it off and cleaned his head every day 
I've know at least 3 babies who had them and it really wasn't a big deal, though for their parents it seemed like it at the time.

I have a couple friends that sons had to wear it. The LOs were never bothered by it.

@ladybee: I so know the feeling, I totally blamed myself (and I am not the guilt type!) when our LO ha to have one. We did the physical therapy and the repositioning but to no avail.
LO was about 7 months when we started and 11 when it ended. He took to it totally fine after the weaning in period, he is a chilled kid though.
It was totally worth it for us as his head rounded out pretty well and was dramatically improved.
I will say that my LO had to wear it a little longer than usual and his growth has been slow.

My nephew wears one. He got it when he was about 6 months old, and at 13 months he is still wearing one. No real end date in sight but it doesn't seem to bother him. It does seem to have slowed his walking down a bit, but I'm sure he'll get there soon

My dd was supposed to get one but because it was superficial our insurance at the time wouldn't cover it. Now I feel bad didn't do more (I could have pushed the issue) for her to get one but thankfully her hair is growing in and it won't really matter. (I hope..I apparently have one too and didn't realize it.)
From what I've been toldthe younger they are the easier they get used to it and the quicker the process. Good luck with everything!

@ladybee: we are going through the same thing with the torticollis and plagiocephaly referrals to Early Intervention; we just don't know if R will need a helmet yet. You did not do anything wrong! I felt the same way at first though. Wall me if you want to commiserate.

I don't have direct experience, but I just want to say that it is a relatively common issue. I know a number of babies who have had to wear them, but the amount of time varied. None of them were bothered by them. It is a good thing that it is being treated and will be a distant memory down the road.

@Aimed: we've been doing the repositioning and stretches like OCD fools but it hasn't changed it enough. I think that's what's so defeating, we tried so hard.

LO is 12 weeks old and has been in weekly PT since 6 but has been sick and the holidays got in the way so we missed some sessions. We have a consult next week at PT with an prostetics guy and next Friday we meet with a specialist (I think only for insurance purposes).
