J will be 8 mo tomorrow and the OT pointed out that he is rocking himself when he cries. We noticed a while back that he shakes his head from side to side and figured no big deal, maybe it's teething, maybe it's just fun. But the rocking while crying...this is in addition to a lot of sensory processing issues he has. Is this just a stage kids go through?

I think so. DS2 will shake his head back and forth when he is sleepy. If he is laying down, he rubs it back and forth. I think it's soothing for babies.

I think there are a lot of soothing techniques kids learn early on that work for them. For my daughter, she used to slap her belly button, now she hums to herself. Did your OT seem worried about it or just say it was his way of soothing himself?

My dd turned her head left to right when crying to soothe herself. I found little broken pieces of hair where she did that, it broke my heart! But no lasting damage, it was just when she was a few months old.

@mediagirl: She wasn't concerned about the head shaking but didn't have anything to say about the rocking, just made notes for herself.
