How long has this been going on? If less than a week, I would say he's probably either teething or has some separation anxiety going on, and hopefully it passes- that has always been the case for my LO. We were never able to do drowsy but awake. Before sleep training she needed to be totally asleep before going down, but after, we always tried to do totally awake but relaxed, if that makes sense.

@rahlyrah: hmmm....well if it's been a few weeks I would try some sleep training again, and be consistent, if you don't want him napping on you anymore that is. There is a method we used at night where you basically stay by the crib and reassure them, but try not to pick up. It might help if he is going through some sep. anxiety. I would probably not let him CIO to the point where he misses his naps altogether though, as that will make for one overtired baby. I think having a solid nap routine so he knows it is coming soon, and being consistent in whatever method you use to get him to nap in his crib, are the most important things.

How old is he now? 9-10 months?

I think it was around 10-11 months (so long ago) that LO would just scream and cry when i put her into the crib at night. I'm not sure how you put him to sleep now, but i just patted a spot next to her (i couldn't reach her) so she just knew i was there and hushed her until she fell asleep. Honestly, the important thing is to be consistent. If you're going to do CIO, stick with it for a few days.

For naps, i'm all about whatever gets them asleep. He could just be going through a sleep regression. There's a wonder week at week 47. With my LO i was comfortable with rocking/nursing her to sleep for naps because i needed her to nap! I would probably address one issue at a time (night sleep or naps).
