I used to be so worried about long car rides and plane flights, but the kids have been true troopers. Thought it might be fun to all share our longest trips with the kids, along with tips/tricks for survival!
It's been a real learning experience for us - mostly around how to manage meltdowns, and the importance of dramamine.
ROAD TRIP: We drove down to Maryland two years ago for a friends' wedding. It should have been a 4 hour drive, but we hit bad traffic both ways! It was 8 hours down, and 5 hours back up. Thankfully the kids slept most of the way... although our daughter was either crying or vomiting every minute she was awake. We figured out later that she gets car sick, just like her dad (sorry honey!). Now we give her dramamine and she's fine in the car.
AIRPLANE TRIP: When we visit my parents, the longest leg is the flight out to Korea. About 15 hours or so. The first year we did it there were some meltdowns, but nothing so bad in recent years. Thankfully Steve Jobs invented iPads to keep my kids entertained! We've done this flight a couple of times now, and I no longer worry at all before we take off. Oh except about how much battery is on our iDevices!
